The Pastor’s Corner
Strength and Comfort for the Christian
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another…” (I Thes. 5:11).
In our text, Paul is telling the church in Thessalonica what to do as they saw the day of the Lord’s return approaching, and it certainly is applicable to our day and time— we are to comfort and encourage one another; we are to edify and support one another.
I am so glad for my brothers and sisters-in-Christ and for the relationship I have with them and the God we serve. If we develop a right relationship with God and our fellowman, we will find strength and comfort to carry us through our darkest hour. The Christian faith and the Christian church work together for a better man, a better community and a better world.
Today, we find so many people who are always down—down on themselves, down on their family and friends, down on the world, and yes, some people are down on the church, the preacher and even God. I feel so sorry for those people who cannot experience the blessings and opportunities that God gives us through our fellowship with the church. One of the first things we need to learn as a Christian is that there has been no perfect person since Christ; however, we serve a God who loves us even in our failures, and it could be through our failures that we learn to love, respect and appreciate one another. God is with His people in their failures as well as their victories. Paul said, “for when I am weak, then I am strong” (II Cor. 12:10).
Our relationship with God and God’s people offers us many opportunities of service. A mature Christian who has given his best and who has kept the faith can look back and reflect upon his past with a thankful heart and happy memories.
When I pause to think about the past 56 year of my life, I can truly say it has been a wonderful relationship, not only with God but with my church family. Through our many successes and failures, we have learned to love and respect one another. My heart aches for those who cannot see the opportunities and advantages the real Christian life has to offer. One thing we must always remember—God is on our side.
The church also gives us support and strength to face the obstacles of life. If there has been any success in my ministry, it’s because God and His people have stood by me and encouraged me to keep on. In I Thessalonians 5:11, Paul says, “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.” There is nothing in the world that heals a wound so quickly as a loving friend who understands and buoys us on even though we feel we have miserably failed.
It was at church that many of us first spoke before an audience as we quoted our Bible verse or sang “Jesus Loves Me”. It was at church that we learned to pray by listening to a good old saint of God praying. It was at church that we learned skills that we still use today. The church is the one institution where people say to each other, “You can do it, give it a try.” God will supply our needs if we will only live for Him and trust Him. Philippians 4:19 says, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” In Matthew 6:33, Jesus said, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” It is when we are in fellowship with God and with one another that we can enjoy the peace and tranquility that the world cannot give to us.

Sunday School News We are continuing our study in the Book of Luke through the months of October and November. Luke was the author of both Luke and Acts, making him the first historian of Christianity. We know little about him except that he traveled for a while with the apostle Paul, who referred to him as “the beloved physician”. Tradition says he was a Gentile, not a Jew, which means he was the only Gentile author of any part of the Bible. Luke’s gospel is similar to Matthew’s and Mark’s, but he includes several stories not found elsewhere, notably the events relating to the birth of John the Baptist, the angels’ appearance to the shepherds, and several favorite parables, including the prodigal son. What a blessing it is to be able to rise on Sunday morning, go to Sunday School and hear the Bible taught in the good and right way by teachers whom we love and respect. On Oct. 19th we are looking forward to a special treat—the children of Sunday School will be presenting a musical program at 10:30 a.m. We would love to have all of you with us on that day. Also, the children are presently working on a Christmas play for the toddlers through 6th grade. Parents, if you would like to have your child participate in the Christmas play, please contact Debbie Evans or Karen Wooten. Thank You!

The woman, forgetful of her errand, and only conscious of that new wellspring of life that had risen within her, left the unfilled waterpot by the well and hurried into the city. Jesus gave her water that was not in the well: She went away singing, And came back bringing Others for the water that was not in the well. – Copied.

Special Thanks… …to Jackie and Lon Bowling for your generous offering to the Newsletter. We appreciate hearing from you. We will keep you both on our Prayer List. Hope you are feeling better now. …to Jack and Mary Meadows for your faithful giving each month. The tapes you requested are in the mail. …to Nola Walsh for your faithful giving each month. We love and appreciate you. ______The Night Shift—Have you ever given thanks for the people who work the night shift? Were it not for them, you would have no electricity or water at night, no fire or police protection, or no emergency service at the hospital. While you are asleep, others are serving. Be grateful! But do the people on the night shift give thanks? Perhaps not. The psalmist admonished the priests in the temple to give thanks as they served God and the people at night. It may have been a lonely ministry, but it was an important ministry. Your High Priest in heaven intercedes for you day and night. He never grows weary or impatient. Have you told Him you are thankful for His faithful ministry? Are you willing to be like Him and serve others, even on the night shift? See Psalm 134 and see what the Bible has to say about being thankful on the night shift. Copied

99 Is Not a Passing Grade The shepherd who looked for his one lost sheep (Luke 15:4-6) could have said, “I have a pretty good record tonight. Only one sheep absent. That gives me a grade of 99 percent.” But he didn’t! Instead he left the security of the fold and went into the night to look for the one sheep that was lost. A mother could say, “All is well tonight. Four of my children are safe at home and only one is lost in the darkness.” But she wouldn’t! Instead she would leave no stone unturned until her other child was safe. A Christian can say, “I’ve visited and visited, but the people just won’t come to my church. I think I’ll stop visiting and inviting.” But he won’t if he remembers the example of Jesus. Jesus’ concern for each person in this world surpasses the concern of the shepherd for one lost sheep or a mother for one lost child. “God so loved the world” also means, “God so loved each one in the world.” ______
A Happy October Greeting to our shut-ins and out-of-town readers. We greet each of you in the lovely name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We hope you are enjoying these beautiful fall days with the many-colored leaves falling and the blue canopy of sky overhead. From fall we can get a picture of the earth preparing to rest through the winter so it can be ready to awaken in the spring for a new beginning. So let’s enjoy this beautiful weather! We send a special “Hello” to Bob and Mary Padgett, John Napier, Alice Mullins, Mr. & Mrs. Gay Bokken, Ed Evans, Ethel Hensley, J. C. Worf, Lonnie & Geneva Gore, JoAnn Hammond, Janice Cremeans, Beulah Roy, Virginia Maynard, Johnny Spence, Jennie Samson, Kathleen Workman, Irene Hammersley, Faye Sturgill and all of our very special readers. Our thot for today: In Psalm 61, we find that distance doesn’t matter to God; no matter how far away we go, God hears our prayers. Depth doesn’t matter to God; no matter how far down we sink, God can lift us up. When life overwhelms us, take time to pray. If we are in danger, prayer brings us into the Holy of Holies, under the shadow of His wings. Read Psalm 61 and see that God is good! We will visit with you again next month! ______Six Little Ways to Mean More to Your Church: Be an On-Timer. …. Be a Friendly Greeter….. Be a Cheerful Giver….. Be a Willing Helper. Be a Hymn Singer….. Be an Earnest Pray-er.
______October 2008 Tell My People Page 6 n The Lighter Side: Little Billy’s mother asked him how he liked his new Sunday School class after he had been attending for several weeks. “It’s great,” he replied, “but our teacher sure has a poor memory.” “What makes you think that?” his mother asked. “Well, every Sunday she asks us what last week’s lesson was about.” The elderly countess was very happy with her new chauffeur. He was courteous, prompt and efficient. The only complaint she had concerned his personal appearance. One day she said to him diplomatically, “Randall, how frequently do you think one should shave in order to look neat and proper?” “Well, Madam,” said Randall, also trying to be diplomatic, “with a light beard like yours, I’d say every three or four days would be enough.” While teaching a class of juniors in Children’s Church, the teacher asked, “What do you think longsuffering means?” A little girl immediately replied, “I think it has something to do with marriage.” There was a Midwestern phone company that was going to hire one team of utility pole installers, and the boss had to choose between Team I and Team II. So the boss met with both teams and said: “Here’s what we’ll do. Each team will be installing poles out on the new road for a day. The team that installs the most utility poles gets the job.” Both teams headed right out. At the end of the shift, Pat and Mike, Team I, came back and the boss asked them how many they had installed? They said that it was tough going, but they’d put in twelve. Forty-five minutes later, Ole and Sven, Team II, came back in and they were totally exhausted. The boss asked, “Well, how many poles did you guys install?” Ole, the team leader, wiped his brow and sighed, “Sven and me, we got three in.” The boss gasped, “Three? Those two guys on Team I put in twelve! “Yeah,” said Ole, “but you should see how much they left stickin’ out of the ground.” See You in Church!
