Proposal by the President The General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF) convened in Lahti (Finland) from 25 to 29 October, 1993. GAISF is the largest Sports Organisation Worldwide regrouping over 100 International Sports Federations, while the International Olympic Committee regroups only some 30 International Sports Federations.

Kevin Weldon, ILS President is asking all Member Organisations to look for a person of high standing in its country to be patron for the national and for the International Life Saving Federation. Names and suggestions are expected.

Life Saving Sport

Life Saving is first of all humanitarian with the view of reducing the incidents of drowning throughout the world.

The opportunity to compete internationally is a big incentive for young people to join life saving. Life saving in turn needs young people to continue and carry on with the humanitarian aspects.

Life saving sport is in principle perfectly compatible with the Olympic ideals ie. :  to promote the development of those physical and moral qualities which are the basis of sport.  to educate young people through sport in a spirit of better understanding between each other and of friendship, thereby helping to build a better and more peaceful world.  to spread the Olympic principles throughout the world, creating international goodwill.  to bring together the athletes of the world.

Lifesaving present at the GAISF meeting ILS-News : 93-1 page 1 ESTONIA 250 representatives from over 100 International Klaus Bartnitzke visited the Estonian Life Saving Sports Federations participated in the Lahti meeting Federation from 29 to 31 October, 1993. together with 57 representatives from the world press. Lifesaving was represented by Klaus Bartnitzke (FIS President) and Dr. Harald Vervaecke PhD (ILS Interim Secretary General).
