We come to the end of another year and who could forget?
The outcome of the EU referendum and the resulting political uncertainty The loss of some of the greatest cultural icons Tim Peake’s 186 day International Space Station expedition The Donald Trump presidency campaign Leicester City's fairy tale Premier League victory
Conversely, who can remember?
the headline story about Palmerston, the chief mouser of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
Whilst the media swings from the palatable to the pointless, we know that schools and academies across the city have created their own news stories, many of which we have been able to celebrate. Indeed, this year we have admired the level of innovation, creativity and productivity that teachers in the City demonstrate on a daily basis. Equally we are never less than astounded at the depth and breadth of invention and ingenuity our pupils and students create each and every day of the school year.
This is not the right time to dwell on political upheaval, changes to the education system or second guessing the imminent rewrite of the 2016 White Paper. It is, however, the right time to say thank you on behalf of the City Council to all those engaged in ensuring our schools and academies remain focused on meeting the needs of our pupils and students and to wish you all a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Thank you on behalf of the City Council.

National Justice Museum launch postponed to later in 2017 - Originally planned for February 2017, the launch of the National Justice Museum will now take place later in 2017. The change of timing is due to a delay in the capital works. The project, which is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will see Nottingham’s Galleries of Justice Museum and their education provider, the National Centre for Citizenship and Law, come together as the National Justice Museum. Utilising the UK’s largest collection relating to law, justice, crime and punishment, the National Justice Museum will include an exciting range of new exhibition areas and visitors will also be able to enjoy a range of brand new fun and interactive activities suitable for all the family. National Justice Museum Education will also provide public legal education programmes in Nottingham, London and the North West. Tim Desmond, Chief Executive for the museum said: “Whilst we have experienced a temporary delay in our capital works, we are looking forward to launching the National Justice Museum later in 2017 across all our legal and heritage sites in Nottingham, London and the North West. Meanwhile it is business as usual and our doors are open at the Galleries of Justice Museum so visitors can still come and be inspired to learn about their rights and responsibilities through our entertaining exhibitions and activities.” The Galleries of Justice Museum will now remain open throughout January 2017 and will offer their full range of tours, exhibitions and education activities. Further updates about the project will be communicated in 2017.
6th Annual East Midlands Primary Languages Conference - Earlier this year Ofsted chief Sir Michael Wilshaw commented that Primary Languages are marginalised. He went on to mention that it shouldn’t be an either/or situation and that “excellent teaching in subjects like foreign languages and science promotes good literacy and numeracy skills. This complements, rather than detracts from, the focus on English and mathematics." The packed programme for the 6th annual East Midlands Primary Languages Conference will inspire your teachers, helping them to provide engaging lessons which will not only boost your pupils’ literacy skills, but also instil in them an abiding interest and curiosity in the subject. This annual conference, which offers high profile national speakers as well as showcasing local talent, represents tremendous value for money and is always very well received by delegates. Feedback from last year’s event included this comment: “Thanks for such a fantastic day yesterday. There was such a superb variety of workshops and the quality was of the highest order. It’s always brilliant to come away from somewhere feeling motivated and inspired.” The conference takes place on January 18th at the Nottingham Conference Centre at Nottingham Trent University. Places are filling up so don’t miss out on this opportunity. The attached flyer gives full details of the keynote speaker, workshop sessions and timings and information on how to book your place.
