Homework Assignment

DUE DATE: Homework assignments will be due as scheduled during our short story unit and our drama unit. Our weekly assignments will shift slightly for our poetry and our novel units. These assignments must be printed and handed in during class.

LENGTH: One full page, no less. Times New Roman, size 12 font. If you use another font/size, larger than average margins, or any other of the typical tricks used to make an assignment longer, you will be given a zero for your work. Please write your name and date at the top of the page after printing it out – no need to take up precious writing space with those details in your actual document!

CONTENT: The purposes of this assignment is for you to record your thoughts in response to the readings that week and to use as discussion in class, as well as references to help you on your formal paper. Each response must include at least ONE appropriately integrated quote to support your response. It is up to you to pick and choose what you would like to address in this assignment. Some questions to consider may be:

 What do you see as similarities and or differences between the two stories?  What strikes you about the story(ies)?  What literary elements do you find crucial within the story, (i.e. plot, character, theme etc.)?  Do you find a connection between this story and another story you have read before?  Do you sympathize with any specific character? Why or Why not?  Do you think this story is “literature”?  What words or passages stick out to you and why?  How does the narration affect this story, (i.e. first or third person)?  Can we “trust” the narrator of the story?  How did any of the characters change or develop throughout the story?  How is this story situated in a larger cultural context?

All of these questions are merely suggestions and to get you to start thinking about how you would respond in these reading logs. Feel free to respond to whatever strikes you from the reading. The most important thing to remember is to analyze and not only summarize what happened in the story.

GRADE: The homework assignments cover the first (short stories) and fourth (drama) unit of our course. They, along with unit two and three’s homework make up 10% of your grade and will be counted towards your overall grade at the end of the semester.
