Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles Long Beach Office LEGAL ORIENTATION PROGRAM
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Legal Orientation Program (“LOP”) provides “Know Your Rights” presentations, workshops and individual legal orientations to detainees in immigration custody at the San Pedro Processing Center in San Pedro, California.
Approximately 95 percent of those detained at San Pedro do not have legal counsel. Many detainees also suffer from a mental illness due to past torture. The goal of the LOP presentations is to demystify immigration law and court procedure as well as educate detainees about possible forms of immigration relief. Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (“LAFLA”) attorneys, social workers, and paralegals regularly conduct presentations, workshops and individual legal orientations to the detainees at the detention center. Volunteers, mental health professionals and pro bono attorneys can get involved by providing much-needed assistance with legal, mental health and translation services.
WAYS YOU CAN ASSIST
Represent a detainee at a Master Calendar or Merits hearing. Mentor a pro bono attorney with his or her immigration case. Conduct legal presentations and/or workshops with the assistance of a LAFLA attorney. Assist LAFLA attorneys with individual legal orientations. Provide translation services. Provide mental health services. Provide legal research and support.
