2000 Australian and New Zealand

2003 Australian and New Zealand Academic Library (CAUL) Statistics

Introduction

The Australian and New Zealand academic library statistics are collected and published annually for CAUL (Council of Australian University Librarians). CAUL has engaged CAVAL Collaborative Solutions to collect and compile the statistics.

Reporting Structure

The 2003 statistics include 48 entries, which cover 39 Australian and 8 New Zealand academic library systems and 1 co-operative store.

As CAUL requested that data be supplied for each institution as a whole no breakdown by branch or campus library is available.

Data Collection

The 2003 data was collected using spreadsheets distributed by electronic mail. The Excel data collection spreadsheet was updated to incorporate the changes to the definitions and to improve clarity, and distributed to all participating libraries. Each library entered its data directly into the spreadsheet and returned it to CAVAL by electronic mail. The data was then merged and the tables in this publication were printed directly from the Excel spreadsheet.

The collection procedures and publication details for the 2003 data are as recommended by the CAUL Statistics Focus Group and endorsed by CAUL. The instructions, and “Deemed list" can be viewed from the CAUL statistics web page http://www.caul.edu.au/stats/.

A “Deemed List “ containing title counts of full-text electronic databases was further developed for the collection of the 2003 data. All participating libraries were supplied with this list and instructed to use it for the completion of columns 35C, 35D, 40C, 40D, 41C and 41D.

Statistical tables and data

The statistical tables provided in this publication are shown in the same format as for 2002. Although there have been changes to the data collected as described above, the column numbers used for 1995 onwards have been retained. The arrangement of

1 data within the tables follows the same pattern as in previous years as much as possible.

The following columns are not shown in the 2003 tables, as the columns are either no longer used, or the supply of data for them was optional -

Column 1A – Floor space (square metres) - optional Columns 11A-11K – Staff listed by HEW level - optional Column 12 – Not used Column 12A – Presentations to groups - optional Column 12B – Participants in group presentations - optional Column 12C – Reference Transactions - optional Column 13 – Not used Column 21A – Inter-campus/Branch loans - optional Column 23 – Not used Column 27 – Not used Column 30 – Number serial volumes added during the year - optional Column 31 – Number serial volumes withdrawn during the year - optional Columns 32,33 – Not used Column 34 – Total number of serial volumes in the collection - optional Column 36,37,38,39 – Not used Column 42 – Shelving (linear metres) - optional Column 42A – Archives (linear metres) - optional Column 43 – Not used Column 46,47 – Not used Column 67A – Turnstiles - optional

The entries in the main statistical tables for the Australian libraries have been arranged alphabetically within states, followed by the data for the New Zealand libraries. The only exception is the Australian Catholic University which is listed ahead of the other institutions.

The reference date is 31 December 2003, with the exception of data relating to institutional populations (columns 52-67). This is 31 March 2003 for Australian University staff data, 31 August 2003 for Australian University student data and 1st July 2003 for New Zealand University Libraries. Other specific exceptions are listed under 'General Comments and Explanatory Notes'.

Population data (columns 52-67) was supplied by DEST (Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training) for all Commonwealth government funded higher education institutions in Australia. However Northern Territory University, University of Newcastle, La Trobe University, RMIT University, Swinburne University, University of Ballarat, Victoria University and Edith Cowan University supplied additional data for their TAFE populations.

Population data for the New Zealand universities and private institutions was supplied by the institution concerned.

Data which is an estimate only is shown in italics. The symbol CP indicates that data COULD NOT BE PROVIDED for that column. A BLANK entry indicates that the item in question is NOT APPLICABLE to that library.

2 Eight rows of statistical information for both Australian and New Zealand libraries have been added to the main tables. These rows show the TOTAL for all Australian libraries, the TOTAL for all New Zealand libraries, the TOTAL for Australian and New Zealand libraries, the MEDIAN, the MEAN, the LOWER QUARTILE (25%), the UPPER QUARTILE (75%) and the VALID NO. of libraries used for the statistical calculations for each column. Statistics are not shown for those columns where the number of valid libraries is less than 25. Columns 44 to 51A, which contain financial data, are in Australian dollars for Australian libraries and in New Zealand dollars for New Zealand Libraries. With the exception of the sub-total of New Zealand libraries expenditure which is in New Zealand dollars, all other expenditure calculated statistics are for Australian libraries only and are in Australian dollars.

Two tables ranking the total library systems according to criteria selected by CAUL are included. Both Australian and New Zealand universities are included in these ranking tables. These tables, headed 'Rankings of total library systems for selected ratios' show the same ratios published for the 2002 data. For each ratio the MEAN, MEDIUM, LOWER QUARTILE (25%), UPPER QUARTILE (75%) and the VALID NO. of libraries used to calculate that column are included. Note that expenditure for New Zealand Libraries has been converted to Australian Dollars for these ratios. As noted in previous reports, interpretive comparisons of these statistics should always be made with caution.

Amendments to the 2002, 2001, 2000 and 1999 statistics are included in this report. Please note that the statistical database maintained by CAVAL is updated whenever notification of a correction is received. Excel spreadsheets containing the statistical data from 1983 to 2003 are available for downloading from the CAUL Web pages http://www.caul.edu.au/stats/. The data from earlier years will be progressively converted into this format and will be made available in the same way.

This is the twelveth year that CAVAL has collected and compiled these statistics. Thanks are due to all the participating academic librarians for their cooperation and their timely responses to this year's electronic data collection.

New Zealand University Libraries

The New Zealand statistics follow the Australian format as closely as possible. Variations are described in these notes. Figures are calculated as at 31 December 2003 except for population (columns 52-67) where the relevant date is 1 July 2003.

Column University Notes 22 - 29 University of Otago Unable to provide a figure for non-serial titles acquired, withdrawn and totals held at the present time – we have always counted items (Cols 22-25) rather than titles (Col 26- 29). We hope to provide figures under these columns next year.

30, 31, 34 University of Otago Relate to bound serial volumes added, withdrawn and totals respectively, rather than bibliographic volumes.

35, 40,41 University of Otago Based on the Deemed List figures provided by CAUL, however there is some unease as we have already published figures that are not based on the Deemed List for these categories. We are therefore in the situation of having two different sets of published figures for the same categories, despite having provided notes in our CAUL return.

44 - 51A All New Zealand libraries Amounts are all in New Zealand dollars. The calculated statistics are for Australian libraries only and are in Australian dollars.
