Applications are invited from experienced and enthusiastic individuals for this exciting Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy post based at Lansdowne Resource Centre, Partick.
The Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy post is an established post. It is based in the Lansdowne Psychotherapy Service. The successful applicant will have clinical leadership; shared with another Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy of the psychotherapy team based in the clinic and have shared responsibilities for providing psychodynamic psychotherapy services to the adult population of West Glasgow.
Excellent communication skills are essential. The post is linked to active teaching programmes and continuing professional development, audit and research are encouraged and supported.
The post is offered on a full time basis (10 sessions).
Applicants must have full GMC registration, a licence to practice and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to a CCT in Psychotherapy or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Current Psychiatric Services – West Glasgow Area
The psychiatric services in Greater Glasgow and Clyde are split into four areas of a city wide mental health partnership (MHP); two areas North of the River Clyde and two to the South. The Mental Health partnership is responsible for the provision of mental health services for the whole of Greater Glasgow. The Associate Medical Director of Mental Health and Learning Disabilities is Dr Michael Smith who is based at the William Street Clinic. The Area Management Team for West Glasgow Area is based at Gartnavel Royal Hospital.
The West area serves a population of around 190,000 based on 2001 census data and is of mixed deprivation. Community services are well established and based around community mental health teams. The area has is covered by three Adult Community Mental Health Teams; Riverside, Arndale and Goldenhill based in Resource Centres. These services in recent years have been enhanced by the development of Crisis Teams and Primary Care Mental Health Teams. The Lansdowne Psychotherapy Service is a long established Psychodynamic service and presently based in a new building along with Riverside CMHT and many other community resources.

Overview
This post is based in The Lansdowne Psychotherapy Service based in The Centre for Health and Care. This is a newly built facility a short distance form Gartnavel Royal Hospital where in patient beds for the sector are located.
The consultant works as a core member of the multidisciplinary team providing psychodynamic assessment and consultation, treatment, and supervision. Other aspects of the role include teaching and providing supervision and training of psychiatrists and other health professionals. In addition to traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy the team have developed their interest and expertise in Mentalisation Based Therapy.
Applicants must have full GMC registration, a licence to practice and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to a CCT in Psychotherapy or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training. It is desirable that a successful applicant would be an approved medical practitioner in terms of the Mental Health (Scotland) Act 2003. It is also desirable that the successful applicant has membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and an interest in developing Mentalisation Based Therapy.
The post holder will also cover colleagues in line with the arrangements set out in the National Terms and Conditions.
The post holder will be supported by input from fellow consultants for patients whom they may share and will be expected to liaise with staff for patients with whom the care is shared. 2 Psychotherapy Service
There are 6 Psychotherapy services in GG&C, West Glasgow, Helensburgh and Dumbarton Based in Riverview Resource Centre, Dumbarton , North Glasgow, based in Stobhill Hospital , East Glasgow, based in Carswell House, South Glasgow based in Leverndale Hospital, Paisley, based in Dykebar Hospital and there is a City Wide Homeless and Personality Disorder Team based in Carswell House . The Consultants from these services meet regularly in the Division of Psychotherapy. There is a wider group of clinical peer support in the West of Scotland Psychotherapy Workshop where clinical work is presented and discussed.
There are many opportunities to develop in this post. There is a large clinical demand for assessment and consultation. The service accepts referrals from General Practice, Primary and Community Mental Health Teams in the area. There are well developed community mental health teams who may request consultation work to help work with particular patients. Consultation may be requested for in-patients.
Within the psychotherapy service is a dedicated clinic for people who have experienced sexual assault or abuse. The successful candidate would be expected to provide supervision and support to the specialty doctor in this task.
There is also an interest in providing Mentalisation Based Therapy for people with Borderline Personality Disorder. A Training Clinic to develop expertise in mentalising has been established and videoed therapy sessions which are then supervised is provided for a small number of patients and staff. The staff ,in gaining expertise, are supporting skills development for other clinicians outwith the department, and it is hoped this development will continue.
Proposed timetable The timetable consist of 9 Direct Clinical Care Sessions and 1 Supporting Professional Activity Session and there is some flexibility around how these sessions are delivered depending on personal circumstances. The following timetable gives an indication of how the sessional commitment might be fulfilled.

The post holder will be expected to provide additional medical leadership to the team and assist with the further development of the service. There is excellent support from a skilled and motivated multi-disciplinary team.
Flexibility of the post holder is necessary to provide psychotherapy services and the post holder may be required to provide urgent advice to team members.
The main duties are
Clinical
Allocation and psychodynamic assessment of patients referred to the service, treatment planning and review.
Treatment of patients, individual or group
Providing supervision of therapy to psychotherapy team members, either individual or group.
Providing psychodynamic opinion advice or consultation to colleagues on request.
Education
The Royal College of Psychiatrists have mandatory guidelines for the training of psychiatrists which include psychotherapy experience in Core and Higher training. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the training and supervision of medical colleagues, along with the present consultant psychiatrist in psychotherapy, the post holder will be expected to contribute to providing psychotherapy educational placement for Core Trainees, usually allocated one per six months and in time specialist psychotherapy trainees. Case Discussion/Balint Group is also mandatory for the trainees and the outgoing consultant shared this task with a colleague in general adult psychiatry. Input to the case discussion group will be expected. Psychiatry trainees are required to undertake psychotherapy treatment of patient’s under supervision and to have competencies in the understanding of relationships unconscious process like transference and countertransference. The post holder is expected to share provision of this task for West Glasgow trainees and liase with college tutors. Supervision can be provided in groups or to individuals depending on the needs of the supervisor and trainees.
Higher trainees in general adult psychiatry may also request further experience in psychodynamic psychotherapy. This is usually by individual request and agreed with their training programme director.
The post holder may also take part in teaching and training provided by the West of Scotland Deanery. The Committee in Psychiatry have a sub group for psychotherapy who are responsible for organising and providing psychotherapy training experiences. The MRCPsych Course, organised by the Deanery is held in Erskine Hospital. There are lectures on psychodynamic psychotherapy in the course. The post holder will be invited onto the psychotherapy sub-committee and may become involved in the provision of specialist lectures and teaching. The post holder may also be asked to contribute to the teaching of medical students on placement in west Glasgow; at present a weekly Balint Group is provided.
The psychodynamic psychotherapy service supports reflective practice developments and have provided Mentalisation Skills to local teams and provide a regular Balint Group for Specialty Grade doctors.
On Call
The post holder will be expected to participate in the North Glasgow on call rota, on a pro rata basis. The post holder, if not already approved by GG&C Board under section 22 of the Mental health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act, will be required to undergo approved training.
Managerial
The post holder will be expected to have clinical leadership of the team and support development of mental health and psychotherapy services. They will be required to ensure proper and safe care of their patients. They will be expected to take part in clinical audit and assist management in development of services including the organisation and functioning of their team.
As part of the psychiatry advisory structure the post holder will become a member of the West Glasgow Division of Psychiatry and be invited, in time to take on roles associated with the development and management of psychiatry in the wider mental health systems.
Continued Professional Development
Training requirements will be in agreement with the Clinical director and local TPD for psychotherapy and be supported via job planning and clinical appraisal. Funding may be available to support this.
It is desirable that the post holder has undertaken advanced training in Mentalisation Based Therapy to support the delivery of MBT and development of Mentlaizing skills for clinical staff in West Glasgow.
The post holder will be expected to remain in good standing for CPD. There are numerous opportunities provided; Medical Teaching in Gartnavel Royal Hospital during term time. Multi-disciplinary teaching is offered by the University department of Psychological medicine, which is based in Gartnavel royal hospital, UGASP which is also organised via the university department, specifically for psychiatrists. Theory and Practice Seminars following quarterly psychotherapy sub committee meetings and as mentioned before clinical discussion with colleagues. Other opportunities are available, as are specific trainings and courses for study leave.

GRADE AND SALARY Consultant £ 75,249 £ 101,451 per annum (pro rata)
New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
HOURS OF DUTY Full Time 40.00
SUPERANNUATION New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made to do this via: www.sppa.gov.uk
