Principal’s Ponderings…..

Welcome to a year of new beginnings and historical happenings for Greenville City Schools!! We are very grateful to have the opportunity to move our students into a state of the art facility in January. Your child’s teachers have been meeting throughout the summer to plan, organize and prepare for this next school year with the intention of making the upcoming transitions as smooth as possible.

It is very important to carefully read all beginning of the year information, especially the parent-student handbook, and send in the paperwork as soon as possible. As always don’t hesitate to call or email with questions or concerns. I love to hear from you and work together to create the best situation for your child. [email protected] 937- 548-3525 (PLEASE NOTE WE HAVE NEW EMAIL ADDRESSES AT GCS)~you can update your One Call information through a link on the GCS website.

WAVE EXPECTATIONS:

We are positive about Good Behavior!

Greenville MS is a place where students will learn and excel. This can only happen if we follow the basic guidelines of respect and responsibility. Through our WAVE expectations (We are respectful, Always responsible, Very kind, and Excited and ready to learn) we reinforce these behaviors at South Middle School. All children have the right to learn and it is our focus to make sure that South is in the business of creating learners that give their best everyday.

Ask your child if they’ve received a BUG Award lately and if so why. If they haven’t please explain to them we are on the lookout for appropriate behavior at South and want a chance to acknowledge it!!! CHARACTER COUNTS AT SOUTH MS!!

On Aug 31st we will take a whole school walking field trip to Memorial Hall to watch a video assembly presentation on:” Be a Hero” and why RESPECT and being Responsible is essential to make sure we are successful in life….

Attendance

These children have higher grades, perform better, and are better prepared for the working world. It is important to send notes and doctor excuses for absences. We will work together in ensuring good attendance and make this a great school year of learning. After three unexcused absences students are declared a habitual truant and after five unexcused a student is declared a chronic truant and may be subject to legal action. Please make sure your child is in school or has a valid excuse. Please call the office at 548-3525 and let Kathy know if your child will be absent. Bullying Awareness:

Family members—parents, siblings, grandparents, and others—play key roles in helping to prevent bullying, stopping bullying that may be occurring, and helping children and youth to cope with bullying that they already have experienced. Bullying can take many forms, such as: hitting or punching, teasing or name-calling, intimidation through gestures, social exclusion, and sending insulting messages or pictures by mobile phone or using the Internet (also known as cyber bullying).

A great resource online is www.stopbullingnow.hrsa.gov/ Also request additional resources from Mrs Schaar or our school counselor. (Mrs. Fine)

PARENTing CORNER

There are times when learning something new or practicing to get better can be hard, but worth it. Children will also realize that losing and failing are both realities of life, and that giving up based on feelings of anger or frustration is never a good option.

Talk to your child about:

►The importance of having a desire to change and improve your life.

►The importance of planning to achieve those desires talked about above.

► How does practice at a sport or musical instrument improve your abilities to do these things?

► Consider how homework is a type of practice that helps one do better at school.
