Project Proposal Education/Vocational Training for Slum Girls

Mission: To provide Education and Vocational Training for Slum Children (Girls) Location : Latur Organization Responsible : Naaz Welfare Society for Urban & Rural Development Number of Beneficiaries : 200 girls directly 1500 people indirectly Amount Requested : £8150

Organization Address : 19/142, Miskinpura, Latur-413512, Maharashtra State, India Organization Profile and Background: Naaz Welfare Society for Urban & Rural Development was established in 1998 by a group of experienced professionals who had been working in the development field for a long time. The main aim of the organization is to help people (specific target group being women and children of socio–economically weaker sections of society) be aware of their rights to education, good health and self-respect.

Objectives of the Project Project Proposal: Naaz Welfare Society for Urban & Rural Development has undertaken a program, which aims at the education and vocational training for girl children in slums in Latur , India This project has two objectives/ programs: Girl Child Education Program: Vocational Training:

Project Background and Scope Project Proposal: This project has been started in the following three slums in Latur: 1. Khori Galli, 2. Barkatnagar, 3. Maligalli. The project areas, located in Latur have low electricity, drinking water, or road facilities. The people live in unauthorized colony in 12.5 yards rooms. The men and women living in the slums are primarily engaged in factory work, tailoring, domestic help, drivers, rickshaw pullers or are unemployed.

This project is divided into the following components: Girl Child Education Program: The status of the girls in the community is very poor. The literacy rate among women in the slums is 28%. The girls typically leave school after the 6th grade and many never get the opportunity to go to school due to poor socioeconomic status of the community. The girls are also subjected to constant gender discrimination. Often, parents prefer to send their sons to schools rather than their daughters. The children are also expected to work in order to support the family. Due to lack of adequate educational resources for the girls in the slums Naaz Welfare Society for Urban & Rural Development felt that there is a strong need for an educational program specifically for girl child education. 200 girls (rag pickers, housemaids and sibling caretakers) were selected by Naaz Welfare Society for Urban & Rural Development staff. These girls will get direct benefit from this project. At the same time, 1500 other children will get the benefit indirectly, through awareness programs based on this project. The progress of children in this program will be closely monitored and those who are weak in studies will be given extra support from the teachers. Naaz Welfare Society for Urban & Rural Development’s intention is to make sure that dropout rates be reduced through this project. Awareness meetings and counseling among the community would help remove the gender discrimination that is quite persistent in the community at present. This project will also expose these girls to more opportunities and make them self-reliant. Parents as well as the rest of the slum community will be exposed to the importance of Child Rights through this program. Street and working children will benefit from this program through education opportunities. Vocational Training: A vocational training center at Khori Galli for embroidery / cutting, tailoring has been set up by Naaz Welfare Society for Urban & Rural Development. The girls belonging to economically weaker sections in the slums have to work to support their family income. The vocational training will help these girls to earn some income for their families and at the same time the vocational skill they will learn in the center will help them be more self reliant. Out of the 200 girls selected for the program, 50 girls who belong to the economically weaker group have been enrolled in the vocational training program. During training, the girls will produce tailoring products and at the same time sell them. The money being generated from this project is being used for raw material (and other miscellaneous materials). The program will encourage the girls to keep the money they earn through vocational training to help support their family income and also encourage the girls to open bank accounts in the bank as a group, called the self-help group.
