February 10, 2014 7:00 P.M. Fairborn Senior Center 325 North Third Street Fairborn, Ohio

Visitors Welcome

(REMINDER: Guild meetings are cancelled if the Senior Center is closed.)

Community Quilts Project Receives Recognition The February guild meeting will focus on the Community Quilts project and Leanne Heagle has invited a member of the Fairborn Women’s Center to provide comments about the group’s work and their gratitude for the many quilts which the guild has donated. Also at the meeting there will be a sale of Spring seasonal fabrics which have been donated to the guild. These would be great for those with small children or grandchildren; you won't want to miss out. There will also be an abundant selection of Daisy Kingdome dress panels; get 'em while they last. Some other items will also be available. The sale of this donated stash goes toward batting and backing for both the Community Quilts and Quilts of Valor projects. So far, the committee has raised over $150 for batting. Workshop Registration Registration is underway for workshops to be offered by the guild during June and July featuring two nationally known authors, designers, quilters and teachers. Jamie Wallen will present five workshops on quilting design June 8, 9 and 10. Sue Nickels, who was originally scheduled to come in 2014, will present two of her most popular workshops July 7, 8 and 9. Wallen is widely known for his long-arm quilting but will be teaching five half-day design classes which apply to all methods of quilting – long-arm, mid-arm, home machine and hand quilting. Two classes will be offered on Monday, June 8 – “Mystical Feathers 1” from 9 a.m. to Noon and “Florals, Leaves and Vines” from 1 to 4 p.m. On Tuesday, June 9, Wallen will teach “Mystical Grids” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will present a lecture and trunk show at the 7 p.m. guild meeting. On Wednesday, June 10, he will teach “Mystical Feathers 2” from 9 a.m. to Noon and “Mystical Shapes” from 1 to 4 p.m. All of Wallen’s classes will be at the Xenia Community Center, 1204 West Second Street, Xenia. Nickels will offer a one-day workshop, “Basic Raw Edge Machine Applique,” from 9 a.m. to Noon and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, in “at the Bergamo Center, 4400 Shakertown Road, Beavercreek. She will teach unique quilt finishes over two days in “The Finished Edge.” The workshop will meet Monday, July 13, and Tuesday, July 14, at the Bergamo Center, with sessions from 9 a.m. to Noon and 1 to 5 p.m. each day. Nickels will conclude her 3-day residency with a lecture and trunk show at the regular guild meeting at 7 p.m. at the Fairborn Senior Center. Complete workshop information for both Wallen and Nickels, along with prices and registration forms are available on the guild website – http://www.miamivalleyquiltersguild.org Mary Bergseth [email protected] 427-3057

A Message from the President… Our January guild meeting was a joy to me, Rita Fishel was a delight and she knows her stuff. I don’t know about you but I purchased a couple of rulers and can’t wait to get started. Our meeting had some length to it with a good number of announcements, but it proves that our guild is very involved and motivated with many different projects and upcoming events. With that said, I want to personally say “Thank You” to all committee members and anyone involved with these committees that work tirelessly to keep things rolling along very smoothly. As your new President, I want to ask that if you have a question/comment/complaint, please submit that in writing to me personally. I have had a few of you come to me, and if I haven’t already answered your question(s) or such; I may have forgotten your request. I apologize; it’s hard to remember everything unless I write it down. You may also email me; your name will not be shared with anyone. Thank you. See you in February, Sherry Gorby [email protected] 849-9261 UPCOMING 2015 EVENTS: March…Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre (5:30 p.m. at Fairborn United Methodist Church) April...Emily Meier, Japanese Sashiko Quilting Demonstration May...Terri McGarry, Adriel School Quilt Auctions June...Jamie Wallen, Trunk Show and Quilting Technique Classes (Enroll Now) July...Sue Nickels, Trunk Show and Finished Edge and Raw Edge Appliqué Workshops (Enroll Now) August11...Pending September 8...Basket Fundraiser October 13...Greene County and 4-H quilts November 10...JayDee Edgell, Lists from a Teacher December 8...Christmas Pot Luck and Block Drawing Sew-in at Fairborn Senior Center All are welcome to attend a monthly sew-in for the Guild at the Fairborn Senior Center. You can sew on something for yourself or work on projects for Community Quilts. Bring your sewing machine, tools and supplies, or do some hand work. Irons will be available. No home interruptions!!! Just as with guild meetings, the sew-in will be cancelled if the Senior Center is closed. Come and have a fun time…laugh and sew!!! If the weather is questionable, please call Sue at 698-9182 to be sure that the stitch-in hasn't been canceled. QOV National Sew Day: February 7, 2015 We continue to receive and fulfill requests for Quilts of Valor in the Miami Valley area! We hope that you enjoyed hearing from two recipients during the January meeting! These veterans are so grateful for our hard work, which seems so insignificant compared to what they have sacrificed for our freedoms. So we continue on! Nine ladies worked on January 19 at The Little Shop of Stitches at our last QOV Sew-In Day. Please thank Jenn at LSOS (whenever you shop there) for her generosity in allowing us to use her classroom. It was a fun day and we began several quilts using the donated November blocks. If you would like a group of blocks to piece together during your leisure (or retreat!) time, please contact me. I'll get them together for you at the February meeting. We hope to have our next Sew-In day in late March/early April. We also participated in the WSU Quilt Show on January 30-31. A report will be given at the February meeting. A BIG THANKS goes to Rosemary Ramsey, who set up our table and worked the show. Also many thanks to Karen Sipos, Carol Mathews, and Ann Foster who also represented our guild at our table. QOV National Sew Day Saturday, February 7 is the Quilts of Valor National Sew Day 2015. On this day, quilters all over the nation will be making quilts to cover our military who have been touched by war. As a guild, we are not participating in an organized effort, as it is so close to our retreat date. But if you would like to participate by sewing at home (or maybe with a group of friends) that day, please register on the QOV website (www.qovf.org) - there are door prizes given out during the day, and lots of pictures posted! We always need blocks, tops, and pillowcases, plus quilting! Obviously, this day is before our next meeting, so if you need something to work on for part or all of the day (or need fabric!), please contact me ([email protected] or 937-698- 4711). Thank you so much for all that you do! Debbie Ginsberg, QOV Coordinator [email protected] 698-4711

If you have not already renewed, please try to do so at the February or March meetings. If you will not be attending either of these meetings, please mail renewals to Karen Bergeron, 3376 Darbyshire Drive, Dayton 45440. Make checks ($20.00) payable to Miami Valley Quilters’ Guild with “Membership” on the Memo line. Please include Name, Mail Address, Phone and E- mail. Membership materials can be picked up at a subsequent meeting. If you would like to have your receipt and membership card mailed to you, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Retreat registration is underway, the dues for 2015 ($20.00) must be paid in advance of the retreat in February. Membership questions can be directed to Karen by phone at 681-1126 or e-mail her at [email protected]. If you have problems receiving Guild information sent by e-mail please contact Ed Chamness (e-mail) [email protected] or (phone) 372-5821. Secret Stitchers Open to All All members are invited to participate in “Secret Stitches” as a way to get to know other quilters and share small quilt related gifts. To participate, wrap a little gift and bring it to the guild meeting and you will be leaving with a gift. There are no sign-ups or specific assignment of a recipient for your gift. Include your name with your gift and you will have a different Secret Stitcher each month you participate. You don’t have to commit to bringing a gift each month, but you will be receiving a gift each month you participate. Hopefully this approach will encourage more members to participate on a regular basis. Try it for one meeting to see how you like it. Happy Stitching! Barb Carruth [email protected] ‘Thank You’ from Raffle Quit Committee Thanks to everyone who did blocks for the 2016 raffle quilt. The Committee really appreciates it. They look gorgeous. We will be laying them out in the pattern and getting ready to sew them together. If we need anything, we will let everyone know. Thanks again for your support. Susan Hill Quilt Show Chairman 426-4740

Your committee is planning on a good time with friends, food, activities, and Oh Yeah, sewing! There have been e-mails sent and handouts are available letting you know what you need to bring if you are going to participate in some of the activities. This could be helpful in packing your supplies, machine and personal items. Don’t forget your power cords!! The farmhands will be available at 9:00 am on Saturday morning which is when the sign in table will be ready for your arrival. Tips for the boys are greatly appreciated. We will be building a cabin, crackin’ an egg or two and see “who wears the pants”. We will have a hoot with a cute little project. Don’t forget to put a little cash away in the cookie jar for some of the extras that will be offered. (Massages, Sewing Machine Cleaning, Scissors Sharpening, Farmer’s Market and more). Don’t forget your fat-quarters! If you can share an ironing board, iron and/or cutting mat there will be a sign-up sheet at the Registration table. We would like to thank everyone who has made donations toward the Retreat. We have received quite a lot!! The Chick Commemorative Pin will be available for the “Down on the Farm” Retreaters 2015. There has been a murder at the Pieceful Lake Quilt Retreat. Can you solve the mystery and discover who the culprit is? Plan to join us for the March 10 guild meeting, a dinner/theatre fundraiser, Murder at Pieceful Lake Murder Mystery Dinner Theater. Tickets go on sale in October at the guild meeting. Each ticket is $20 and includes Salad, Dinner, Desserts and Drinks…and of course a show. The first 90 tickets sold will receive an “interactive part” in the show. No, you don’t have to act. You receive a character name and question(s) to ask the suspects. We have 200 tickets available, so please invite your spouses and friends. It’s really going to be a good time while serving as a fundraiser for the guild. Members are working hard at learning their parts and the actors don’t even know who the “real” murderer is. Mark your calendar Date: March 10, 2015 Time: Doors open at 5:30 p.m., program begins at6 p.m. Place: Fairborn United Methodist Church 100 N. Broad St., Fairborn, OH 45324 There is NOT a meeting at the Senior Center in March. We are doing the mystery dinner. If you are not attending the dinner, we will see you at the usual time and place in April. Save Hobbs Labels for Community Quilts If you buy Hobbs batting please cut the UPC symbol from the batting bag (or bring the whole plastic bag) to be sent in for batting from Hobbs. They have a program that allows us to purchase rolls of batting at unbelievable prices. I would like to use it for both the Quilts of Valor Program as well as the Community Quilts Program. Also, someone asked if I would put something in the newsletter stating what supplies we need for community quilts. Fabric is always appreciated, but we really need backing material. Most of our quilts are lap sized or smaller, so 50 X 60 would work if you are long-arm quilting. For those of our quilters who machine quilt, the leftover fabric can be used as binding when cut off the finished quilt and re-cut into 2 ¼ or 2 ½ strips. Batting is also greatly appreciated. For long-arm quilting we can’t use Fairfield products, so Hobbs or Warm and Natural are two that work well.
