There Were No Urgent Issues Or Concerns

CISC Minutes

June 10, 2010

Attendees: Jon Barclay, Brett McKeachnie, Mark Stone, Kevin Young, Colby Callahan, LeRoy Brown, Vickie Walker

Area Reports

There were no urgent issues or concerns.

Security Update

Microsoft released three critical and seven important security updates on Tuesday.

Apple released updates for the Safari browser.

Other Issues

The Cisco campus firewalls were upgraded. LeRoy is testing the Botnet filter software. It doesn’t have the capabilities of the web filter, but is much cheaper.

LeRoy gave an update on the Cisco Iron Port webfilter. Every machine they have tested with Ironport has had something on it. Cisco is going to let us keep the box for another three months until they get the reporting issue worked out. It takes a good twenty minutes or more to access a report and then you have to do the tweaking. The cost for the webfilter and maintenance is about $50,000. It is about $3,000 for the Botnet software. When we get the money for the webfilter, we will be looking at M86 and others before we buy.

The IT Security Analyst position should post sometime next week.

Any security issues that you want to see rolled out to faculty and staff need to be documented and discussed in CISC. We will make a recommendation to EIP. They will make the decision on what is to happen. This does not apply to the labs. The Ctrl/Alt/Delete decision will be taken to EIP by Ray.

This committee needs to start thinking about and discussing what we should be doing for password complexity and length.

Thanks to everyone who looked at the Security training. Jon has been working on correcting the errors. This security training will be required by all faculty and staff. You can login with the following generic accounts:
