WALTON HIGH SCHOOL

DEPARTMENT OF MFL

The School

Walton High School is a mixed specialist science school situated just south of Stafford, with approximately 1300 students on roll (aged between 11 -18). The school enjoys an attractive location, and provides a safe, healthy and pleasant working environment for both staff and students. Students are well behaved and well motivated and their examination results at all levels are amongst the most impressive in the country.

The MFL Department

The department is housed in a suite of 6 first-floor classrooms and each member of staff has their own classroom. Modern Foreign Languages is a thriving subject at Walton High School with all students studying two languages (French and German) at Key Stage 3 with many then opting to take one or both languages to GCSE and beyond into A level. The department endeavours to provide an enriching curriculum which recognises that Modern Foreign Languages are more than a subject limited to the classroom. In recent years the department has taken part in trips to Europe. It is currently organising a visit to Strasbourg with KS3 French and German students.

The department currently consists of four full-time and one part-time specialist and all members have their own teaching area. Responsibility points within the department are allocated to the Head of Department and Second in Department. A member of the team also has a whole-school responsibility.

The department takes part in a range of initiatives and competitions provided by routes into Languages including the Spelling Bee.

We use the Allez (Oxford) series of KS3 for French with Kerboodle, supplemented by online subscription websites. Staff use the AQA examination board for GCSE and A level and the courses are supported by the Oxford AQA textbooks. The department believes in working collaboratively and supportively and takes pride in its achievements.
