These are the steps to the demonstration explain how to enter LOOKUP functions. The two areas that will be the look up tables have been named: Payrate (cells A4:B9) for VLOOKUP and Tax (cells E4:G5) for HLOOKUP.

Steps: 1 Open the workbook ValleyView Imported Goods 2 Select the worksheet LOOKUP Function 3 Place your cursor in the cell E12

4 Click on the Paste Function button 5 Click on Lookup & Reference section from the left and then select VLOOKUP from the right column 6 Click on the OK 7 The first box is for entering the cell reference containing the pay code C12. If you can’t see which cell it should be, click and drag the VLOOKUP dialogue box out of the way. 8 The second box is for entering the name of the lookup table payrate 9 The third box has to contain the column number containing the value to be returned 2 10 The last box does not need anything entered in it. If left empty the function looks for an approximate match or the nearest lower amount. If you put the word FALSE in this box, the function will look for an exact match. Usually an approximate or nearest lower number is sufficient.

11 Click on OK when you have filled in the boxes. 12 The result should appear in the cell. 13 Move across to the first cell in the Gross Pay column and enter a formula to calculate this (Hourly rate * Hours worked)

14 Move the cursor across to the first cell in the Tax column, this is where you are going to enter the HLOOKUP formula.

15 Click on the Paste Function button 16 Click on Lookup & Reference section from the left and then select HLOOKUP from the right column 17 Click on the OK 18 Click in the first box enter the lookup cell reference F12 (Gross Pay) 19 In the second box, type in the word Tax which is the table name for this table. 20 In the third box, type in the row number which contains the tax percentage, which is 2 21 Click on OK

22 Click on the formula bar after the ) and enter * 23 Key in the Gross Pay cell reference F12 Note: The lookup formula only returns the percentage of tax. To calculate the tax amount, we must multiply it with the Gross Tax. 24 Move you cursor across to the first blank cell in the Net Pay column 25 Enter the formula to calculate the net pay gross pay – tax 26 Now fill all the formulas down to calculate the Net pay for the rest of the employees
