Using the “Instructions/Guidelines For Completing the Nomination Form”, the Team evaluated Steve Van Duine’s nomination and determined the following:
Nominators should substantiate relevant achievements; specific examples must be provided.
Many examples were provided. We believe that Steve used initiative on bartering for the $2,500 truck. Steve took the time to learn about rebuilding computers and laser printers to increase their re-sale value. The knowledge he gained also made him a better salesman for the rebuilt computer systems. This is an on-going type of activity that requires constant learning and effort. Steve single-handedly ran Surplus Sales for most of the previous year. Steve increased sales to external/internal entities using the Internet to sell highly specialized equipment. These activities were above and beyond what would have been normally expected for his job classification.
Length of time of activity, project and /or service (start date/end date).
Steve takes the time to constantly learn about computer salvage. This is an on going effort. The truck deal had no specific time frame. Most of the year he was working short-handed.
Visible savings (time, money, non-aggravation).
Steve was very strong in this category: $2,500 for the truck and saved landfill space. Saved payroll expense while an employee was on sick leave. Made money for the organization with his marketing expertise by re-building computers and printers, in addition to, marketing on the Internet.
Degree of improvement.
Computers and printers were put into good working condition that improved the market value for them. The Internet Bulletin Board advertising increased the market for surplus equipment. Acquiring the used truck improved the delivery/pick-up service to the departments on Campus.
Degree of impact.
Better re-sale value is gained for surplus equipment due to Steve’s efforts. This affects all the departments who send used equipment to Surplus.
Degree of complexity in relation to the nominee’s classification.
Steve is a Lead Storekeeper. Many of his achievements were in marketing and the technical ability acquired rehabilitating computers and printers.
Documentation (when available) should be provided to support the nomination, i.e. letters of appreciation, Shinning Star Awards, Name that Star Certificates, Customer Heroics Awards, etc.
This type of documentation is especially important when reviewing a Customer Service nomination. It is not required for nominations for neither “Employee Innovation” nor “Special Projects”. References in the written nomination suffice for these two types of nominations.
