Frequently Asked Questions

1) Who is eligible to tryout for the volleyball teams? Any female that is a Rising 9th thru 12th grader attending Mill Creek next fall.

2) How will the girls know whether or not they made a team? The girls will be assigned a number at tryouts and they will be give 2 stickers to wear during tryouts with that number on it. The final teams will be posted on the school website using the tryout numbers.

3) Will all 3 teams be formed at tryouts or will you keep a bunch of girls and put them into teams later? The 9th, JV, and Varsity teams will be formed on the last night of tryouts.

4) Can 9th or 10th graders make higher or lower teams than their grade this fall? All players will be evaluated on the talent they possess. 9th and 10th graders CAN make the JV and/or Varsity team. However, 10th graders can not make the 9th grade team.

5) What should the girls wear to tryouts? They should wear athletic shorts or spandex, a tshirt, and athletic shoes.

6) Does my daughter need ankle braces or kneepads for tryouts? If they already have them, then yes, they are more than welcome to wear them. If they don’t currently own any, I would wait to see if they make a team before purchasing. 7) Are the summer workouts/practices required? No, they are not required. We will have some practices to prepare for the season, but we understand that many families will travel and be out of town during certain weeks. We would like for the girls to attend any time that they are in town.

8) My daughter is in 8th grade and there is a school event on 1 night of tryouts, does she have to choose between the school event and trying out for the team? Tryout attendance is typically mandatory; however, we make exceptions for school functions. (if you have 1 of these sitations, please see Coach Williamson after this meeting)

9) Is there an easy way to get a physical exam done or should we just go to our doctor? Mill Creek High School is holding physicals on Saturday morning, May 13, from 8:00am-12:00noon. The cost is only $20. You can take our form to your doctor as well.

10) How do I know if my daughter needs a new physical? Physicals are good for exactly 1 year. If your daughter is just now entering 9th grade, we need a new physical from her, or a copy of her old physical. If you are bringing a copy of her old physical, we still need the rest of our physical participation form filled out along with the copy of the old physical.

11) Where do we turn in the physical once we get a new one? If your physical was filled out at MCHS on May 13, it is in our system. If not, it can be brought to tryouts and checked by Coach Williamson at registration.

12) What should our daughter bring/wear to tryouts? Normal tennis shoes, athletic shorts or spandex, and a tshirt. She should also bring water and a small snack.

13) Can the parents stay and watch the tryouts? No, the tryouts are closed to all spectators.

14) What will they be expected to do at tryouts? The girls will be evaluated on speed, strength, overall athleticism, coachability, passing, blocking, serving, spiking, setting, and so on.

15) What are the cost/fees/dues associated with making the team? Team camp is for the JV and Varsity team only and costs around $375, and the team dues for the season will be around $350-$400.

16) How many girls will you be keeping on each team? That is a hard question to answer as it varies from year to year and from team to team, but we normally keep either 11 or 12 on each team.

17) How long does the season last? The season will start August 1st. The 9th grade team and JV team will be finished September 30th, and the Varsity team sometime around middle to late October.

18) How many games/matches will they play? The JV and 9th team will play about 30-35 matches total. On a typical night they will play 2 or 3 matches, on Saturdays they will play 3-5 matches.

19) How often will you practice? We will practice every day after school from 2:45-4:45.

20) What happens on “game days”? The girls will change in the locker room, and then eat together as a team in the commons, and then board the bus for their game.
