Mrs. Cancino S Fifth Grade Band Newsletter

Mrs. Cancino’s Fifth Grade Band Newsletter March 20, 2017 Dear Band Parents:

All students received a reminder letter, with Spring Concert details, yesterday at school. You should see that coming home this weekend. The concert is only about 5 classes away!!

Again, the music you should be hearing is a combination of lines from the book (#63, 75 or 78, 81, and 98), selections from their Duets packet (London Bridge, Twinkle…Star, and/or Ode to Joy), and a handout of short pieces (Ode to Joy, Old MacDonald Had a Band, and/or Hard Rock Blues). One school has a couple of extra tunes, but doesn’t include some of the other duets and handout (Super Hero Blues, Shepherd’s Hey). Students will be having playing tests, announced and unannounced, on this music, so they should be spending their practice time on these.

I sent off my Solo & Ensemble registration forms to the printshop at the start of the week, and they just arrived today. If you are interested in having your child participate (5-minute performance on Saturday, May 6 at Milton Somers, between 9 and 12), then be on the lookout for the form. It’s a pretty quick turn-around to get them back to me, and late forms can’t be accepted. I will be distributing those to students on Monday.

Everyone who brought instruments to school this week was able to take make-up playing tests for the third quarter. I collected stacks of missing written assignments. All grades have been entered and uploaded. Keep in mind, your child still has another 9 weeks before anything Band-related will appear on report cards, but you can still check to see how they’re doing now, on Edline. One of my classes at Mitchell lucked out…my dog ate their homework, but only the parts with their names. Those band students earned a full 10 points

The all-county honors band concerts will take place April 4th (Barnhart, Parks) at Westlake H.S. and April 5th (Mitchell, Matula) at Thomas Stone H.S., both starting at 7 p.m. Extra credit to any student who attends and writes a short summary of the concert. Also, most middle and high schools will hold their spring concerts in the first few weeks of May. Check around and see to earn more extra credit!

Have a great week,

Mrs. Cancino Band Director: Matula, Mitchell, Barnhart, Parks [email protected] http://www.ccboe.com/departments/music/
