As a result, he was educationally handicapped when he entered seminary and was dismissed in his fourth year. As a prison guard, he so profoundly influenced the gunfighter, Cole Younger that Younger, upon his release from prison, spent the rest of his life touring the country and speaking against crime. He eventually entered the Capuchin order, taking the name Solanus, and was ordained as a simplex, or Mass, priest. He was never allowed to preach or hear confessions. In Yonkers, NY, he was assigned the humble duties of sacristan and porter. Soon, however, his charismatic gift of healing and prophecy began to manifest them. The people flocked to him, so much so that as his health declined, he had to be moved to a rural monastery in Indiana … to which busloads of people came down from Detroit. Following his death in 1957, he was subsequently exhumed and found to be incorrupt. He was pronounced Venerable to Pope John Paul II in 1995.
