JOHNSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT Departmental Memorandum

General Order #05-003b August 29, 2005

To: All Personnel

From: Chief Krohse

Subject: Squad Assignments and Responsibilities

This Order replaces General Order #05-003a, dated July 18, 2005 which should be removed and discarded.

To ensure that sufficient personnel respond to emergency requests on evenings and weekends, a Squad System was created. Members whose work schedules allow them to be available on most evenings and weekends were assigned to one of three Squads, with coverage assignments rotating daily. Coverage began at 2200 hours (10:00 pm) and ended at 0600 hours (6:00 am), each evening. The presumption was that sufficient personnel would be available between 1800 hours (6:00 pm) and 2200 hours (10:00 pm) each evening and between 0600 hours (6:00 am) and 2200 on weekends to provide coverage. This is not always the case, requiring a change in policy.

Effective Friday, July 8, 2005 Squad duty assignments will be as follows:

Weekdays Weekends 1800 hrs – 0600 hrs Friday 1800 hrs – Sat. 0600 hrs Sat. 0600 hrs – Sun. 0600 hrs Sun. 0600 hrs. – Mon. 0600 hrs

Holidays that fall on a weekday will receive the same coverage as a weekend day.

Members assigned to a Squad will be responsible for all calls that are dispatched during their duty period. A minimum staffing level of five personnel must be maintained for each Squad, with at least one officer and a Fire apparatus driver available. Of those five personnel, at least three must be certified at a minimum of EMT-B. Members that need relief from Squad duty must notify the Chief via Email or directly to have their name placed on an off duty calendar, copies of which will be posted and distributed. If the Squad is already at minimum levels, you will be directed to obtain coverage from a member of comparable qualifications, from a different Squad.

Individuals not assigned to a Squad will be expected to respond to calls that occur whenever they are available. Call response totals and drill participation will be tracked for all personnel. Those unable or unwilling to commit sufficient time and effort to the Johnston Fire Department may be asked to step down.

Squad assignments will be as follows:
