Proposal Subject Revision to MR Credits 5.1 and 5.2 to include LEED Canada – NC language on Matter: shipping by rail or water

Contributors: Martha G. VanGeem [email protected] (submit name and email) August 4, 2006

Proposal Text: Intent remains the same as Credit MR 5.1 (Increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation)

Requirements: Specify a minimum of 10% (based on cost) of building materials that are extracted, harvested, or recovered, as well as manufactured within a radius of 500 miles of the project site

Or

Specify a minimum of 10% (based on cost) of building materials that are extracted, harvested, or recovered as well as manufactured and shipped primarily by rail or water within a radius of 1500 miles.

Or

Specify a minimum of 10% of building materials that reflects a combination of the above extraction and manufacturing and shipping criteria (e.g., 5% within 500 miles and 5% shipped by rail within 1500 miles)).

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing components and specialty items such as elevators and equipment shall not be included in this calculation. Only include materials permanently installed in the project.

Pros: Shipping by barge or rail is more efficient than by trucks. The 1500 miles allows for shipping materials via the Mississippi River and its tributaries, for example.

Cons:

Cost: None (Please estimate the time and cost needed to implement your proposal. Assume all staff, consultant, and volunteer time is 100/hr. If possible distinguish between paid and volunteer hours, but in order to calculate “cost” use the $100/hr rate for all person hours. Please show logic and calculations if possible.) Cost/Benefit: (to be calculated by the reviewer)

Please rank the proposal from 0-100. 100 means Wow! This is a tremendous improvement! 0 means no improvement or is detrimental. Performance Extension: Business Enhancement:
