5 of 11 Spa Getaway March 09 Location We are camping on private land just outside the town of New Castle, CO. There is an outhouse (bring toilet paper) and fire rings. There is a river on the property that water can be filtered from.

Camp is south of Meet at Elk Run Rd City Market

We will drive from the church to exit 105 at New Castle. We will be meeting Mr. Dave Smith at the City Market located at 850 Castle Valley Blvd. (Directions below) we will then follow Mr. Smith to the campsite.

7 of 11 Spa Getaway March 09 Saturday morning we will drive from New Castle to the Hanging Lake trail.

After the hike to the lake we will drive to Glenwood Spring to go to the hot springs pool.

After the pool we will return to the campsite in New Castle.

Weather Historic weather shows an average high of 53 in the daytime and an average low of 26 overnight. The extremes for this time of year were a record high of 79 and a record low of minus 14. Precipitation averages 1.55 inches during the month of March.

We will be hiking to Hanging Lake on Saturday morning and need to be ready for warm, cold, rain, or snow. All scouts should have their 10 essentials, including 2 water bottles, fleece hat, shirt and gloves, good rain gear and solid boots for hiking. (Source: http://www.weather.com/?from=globalnav).

Travel Plan We will meet at PUMC at 16:00 on Friday. Travel will be by private vehicle to the campsite outside of New Castle. There will be a roll call and vehicle checkout at the church. Cars will be checked in at the parking area

9 of 11 Spa Getaway March 09 and a final roll call will be made at camp before dark. We will be pulling the small troop trailer. As always, Scouts and Adult Leaders will travel in Class A Uniforms to and from the event.

The actual drive time is estimated at around 3 hours, depending on traffic and weather.

Rest stops: There are several possible rest stops along the way. There is a rest stop on Vail Pass; this might be a good stopping point as we will be at least 2 hours into the drive at this point.

Driver cautions: Just be aware of the changing driving conditions that weather could bring since we will be driving over mountain passes.

Saturday Travel

On Saturday we will travel from camp to the trail, to Glenwood Springs, then back to camp.

Return Trip We will pack up and leave camp Sunday morning at approximately 9:30 am. We should arrive back at the church around 12:30 to 1:00 pm. There will be a roll call and car checkout at the parking area. Scouts will need to be checked out at the church before leaving.

Emergency Plan In the event of an emergency, the course of action will be dictated by the geographical location it occurs at.  Driving between Parker and New Castle within cell phone coverage, call 911 or *CSP (Colo State Patrol) and follow their directions.  Outside of cell phone coverage during travel to and from the camp, request assistance from passing motorists to contact Highway Patrol or local police/fire/ambulance. If not available, return to the first area of cell phone coverage to contact 911: Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint report full digital coverage along most of I-70 and in New Castle.  Saturday Hike: Use radios to request help or return to Parking Lot and cars and drive to nearest cell service.  Sunday: within cell phone coverage, call 911 or *CSP (Colo State Patrol) and follow their directions. Local Emergency Contact In the event of an emergency, Michele Kjar will be notified and will contact necessary parties.

Evacuation Radios will be issued to key adult leaders, acting SPL, and group scout leaders. In the event an evacuation becomes necessary, PUMC will be the rendezvous point for all evacuations, unless an alternate site is designated by the Camp Host on Evacuation Orders. Roll call will be taken to ensure the safe return of all boys.
