Extra Credit – 3rd Nine Weeks Due Date: March 11, 2010

Extra Credit Assignment “Build a Roman Arch”

Materials:  an empty cereal box  school glue  masking tape  magic marker  scissors  newspaper (actual print – not glossy ads) ripped into 1” x 6” strips  spray paint (stone colored – Rust-oleum Multicolor Textured is recommended)  black acrylic paint  paint brush with a fine tip

Instructions: 1) Cut the bottom off of the cereal box. 2) Draw an arch on the front of the cereal box. Use a compass or a round object of some kind to make a nice uniform circle shape at the top. 3) Cut the arch out. Use the part that you cut out as a stencil to make another arch on the back of the cereal box. Cut it out as well. 4) Use making tape to cover the openings you have cut into the box. Place the tape over the coverings in a uniform fashion by overlapping a small bit of tape each time you place a new piece. You should have an enclosed arch at this point. (Optional: If you would like any kind of 3-D accents like a lip around the top of the box, glue those on before moving to the next step.) 5) Papier-mâché the arch. See the extra credit project from first semester for instructions on papier-mâché. (Recipe: two parts water to one part glue) 6) Once the papier-mâché is dry, you will need to paint the project. Follow the instructions on the paint of your choice to achieve the best results. Extra Credit – 3rd Nine Weeks Due Date: March 11, 2010

7) For the maximum 20 points on any test, you will need to go back and add details of some achievement that you are proud of to your project. Remember, these arches were meant to memorialize the great deeds of important people. Include scenes and images that relate to your greatest achievement.
