The current award was 24 presented to Coach Venables on December 6, 2016, in Little Rock, 25 Arkansas. He had been a finalist twice previously, in 2015 as 26 Clemson defensive coordinator and in 2006 as defensive 27 coordinator at Oklahoma. He is the first Clemson assistant coach 28 to win the award; and 29 30 Whereas, Coach Venables is no stranger to excellence. In his 31 twentyone years as a fulltime assistant coach, his teams have 32 recorded twentyone winning seasons, played in twentyfour bowl 33 games, and won tenplus games seventeen times; and 34 35 Whereas, he has coached in five national championship games and 36 helped the Tigers to their second national title in 2016 with a 37 riveting 3531 win over Alabama; and 38 39 Whereas, in 2016, Coach Venables’ athletes amassed 130 tackles 40 for loss and a schoolrecord 49 sacks. His teams have led the 41 NCAA in total tackles for loss each of the last four seasons; and 42

[476] 2 1 Whereas, named by Rivals one of the “Top 10” 2015 recruiters in 2 the ACC, Coach Venables was also selected 2014 National 3 Defensive Coordinator of the Year by FootballScoop and National 4 Recruiter of the Year by Rivals in 2015. Many other honors and 5 achievements have accrued to this outstanding coach, and he is a 6 big reason Clemson has won backtoback ACC titles for the first 7 time in twentyeight years; and 8 9 Whereas, he owns a national championship ring as codefensive 10 coordinator and linebackers coach at Oklahoma in 2000. As a 11 player at Kansas State, he was Honorable Mention AllBig Eight in 12 1992 with 124 tackles. He was also an AllAmerican at Garden City 13 (Kansas) Community College, recording 276 career tackles for that 14 institution; and 15 16 Whereas, in 1992, Brent Venables earned a bachelor’s degree in 17 political science from Kansas State University. He finds strength 18 for his labors in the strong support of his family: his lovely wife, 19 Julie; their two sons, Jake and Tyler; and their two daughters, 20 Laney and Addie; and 21 22 Whereas, the members of the Senate, appreciative of Brent 23 Venables’ gifts as both football coach and exemplar to his athletes, 24 take great pleasure in recognizing him on receiving this latest 25 accolade, the coveted Frank Broyles Award for 2016. Now, 26 therefore, 27 28 Be it resolved by the Senate: 29 30 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 31 congratulate the Clemson University football teams’ Defensive 32 Coordinator Brent Venables, on being selected to receive the Frank 33 Broyles Award. 34 35 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 36 Coach Brent Venables. 37 XX 38
