Valerius PTO Board Meeting May 7, 2015

Members Present: Todd Pawlowski, Christina Roesler, Halyna Vogeler, Ashley Mobley, Linda Fisher, Anne Rempe, Shawna Beron, Kristen Richer-Doyle, Jeff Doyle Members Absent: Joscelyn Smith, Meredith Mauro, Susan Swacker

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm.

Students of Ms Mobley’s and Mrs Fisher’s 1st Grade classes presented to the PTO “A Day in the Life of a 1st Grader.” A Powerpoint presentation was utilized as the students presented the information.

1. Consent Agenda – April 2, 2015 Minutes Motion for approval: Todd Pawlowski moved to approve. Second: Christina Roesler Discussion: None Ayes: Pawlowski, Roesler, Vogeler, Mobley, Fisher, Rempe, Beron, Richer-Doyle, Doyle Nays: None Motion Passes

2. Consent Agenda – April Treasurer’s Report Motion for approval: Christina Roesler moved to approve. Second: Ashley Mobley Discussion: Shawna Beron reported that $21,552 was raised during the 2014/15 school year with expenditures in near equal amounts in the Encouraging Kids ($11,649) and Connecting Families ($11,223) categories with $7,950 Serving Valerius. Todd Pawlowski inquired as to the cause of the budget deficit and how the deficit was covered. Shawna Beron commented that the item attributing largely to the budget deficit was the PTO’s decision to spend down some “saved” funds to purchase an extra iPad bundle for the classrooms which had not previously been budgeted for. Shawna also noted that some expenses were still outstanding (such as an upcoming assembly, a grade-level field trip and 2 more classroom assistance requests) and that the financial books will be closed for the current school year by June 30. 3. Consent Agenda – Bylaw Revisions Motion for approval: Todd Pawlowski moved to approve. Second: Linda Fisher Discussion: Anne Rempe noted that the draft of the revised bylaws was made available at the April 2, 2015 PTO Board meeting as well as communicated via email to Valerius families through the weekly PTO Corner throughout the month of April. Ayes: Pawlowski, Roesler, Vogeler, Mobley, Fisher, Rempe, Beron, Richer-Doyle, Doyle Nays: None Motion Passes 4. Consent Agenda – 2015/16 Budget Motion for approval: Ashley Mobley moved to approve. Second: Shawna Beron Discussion: Christina Roesler requested that the income received from the Book Fair be taken back to $4,800 while expenses may remain at $5,000. Shawna Beron commented that the budget will not balance due to the PTO’s intent to spend down savings for Playground Improvements ($20,000). Ayes: Pawlowski, Roesler, Vogeler, Mobley, Fisher, Rempe, Beron, Richer-Doyle, Doyle Nays: None Motion Passes

5. Consent Agenda – 2015/16 Officers Co-President: Anne Rempe Co-President: Vacant Secretary: Joscelyn Smith Co-Treasurer: Amber King Co-Treasurer: Susan Swacker (partial year) Motion for approval: Shawna Beron moved to approve. Second: Halyna Vogeler Discussion: Susan Swacker has agreed to begin the school year as Co-Treasurer in order to train a replacement. The Committee is still searching for another Co-President to fill that vacancy. Ayes: Pawlowski, Roesler, Vogeler, Mobley, Fisher, Rempe, Beron, Richer-Doyle, Doyle Nays: None Motion Passes

6. Presentation of Major Fundraisers for the 2015/16 school year a. Anne Rempe provided an overview of the fundraisers Valerius will participate in for the 2015/16 school year. Parents indicated a desire not to sell anything and therefore the PTO was careful in the activities it is choosing to participate in to support the budget/programming in place. Primary PTO Fundraisers: Fall: Read-a-Thon (Oct) and Book Fair (Nov) Spring: Family Fun Night (Feb) and Book Fair (Mar) Supplementary PTO Fundraisers include: Spirit Wear (sales of existing inventory) HyVee Shop and Share/Market Fresh Grill Nights (Sept, Nov, Jan, Mar) Gift Card Reward Program (2nd Monday of each month) Boxtops/Soup Labels (ongoing) Community Support: Character Council Fundraisers (typically fall and spring) Coins for a Cause (around book fair time) Jump Rope for Heart Community Building Events: Classroom Parties (Sept, Dec, Feb) Back-to-School BBQ (Sept) Skate Parties (fall and spring) Bingo Night (Jan) 7. Playground Update a. Shawna Beron commented that a kick-off/planning meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19 at 7pm in the Valerius Media Center to discuss current playground concerns, ideas for improvements and to develop next steps. All are welcome. Anyone who cannot attend can email the Valerius PTO account to provide input. 8. End of Year Activities a. Anne Rempe listed the end of year activities: 5th Grade Talent Show and Field Day (5/21), Buddy Run and Running Club Assembly (5/27) and the Family Picnic during lunch times (5/28) b. Halyna Vogeler presented information about the Cultural Day taking place school-wide on 5/26. It will be put on by CultureAll (www.cultureall.org) and will feature an assembly as well as each grade level will participate in hands on music, dance and art activities from two (2) different cultural sessions: China, India, Bosnia, Mexico, Kenya, Brazil. Students have been exposed already to the CultureAll organization through the Read-A-Thon story-teller last fall and will likely enjoy this educational and hands-on multi-cultural experience.
