2016/2017 Introduction to Automotive Service

Course duration = 96hrs

Goals and objectives; This course is intended to provide students with foundation knowledge and skills to safely operate in an automotive service environment. Students will learn both shop and personal safety, proper usage of general hand and power tools and general service shop equipment. Students will learn to effectively communicate with other technicians and customers, and properly document their actions during vehicles inspection and service. Students will learn to perform basic vehicle inspections for wear and failures, and how to perform common maintenance.

Student expectations; Students are expected to attend class with a minimum of 95% attendance, be registered with their designated manufacturer for training records and online training, and complete online safety training at SP2.org. Students will also participate in labs designed to provide them with experience in the identification and proper handling of common hand and power tools associated with automotive service. Students will be given written assignments to gauge their understanding of the concepts presented, and to build their experience with proper documentation of their actions.

Preparation; Students should be prepared to be immersed into an automotive repair facility environment. This will include, but is not limited to, heavy lifting (in excess of 50lbs), high ambient temperatures, slip/fall hazards, exposure to very hot and/or rotating machinery, and exposure to numerous industrial chemicals. Students will be directed individually and in groups to perform specific functions. Active participation is encouraged. Textbook and website work will be done as homework. This will facilitate more efficient use of time in the auto lab.
