Auction 70 To take place on 7 December 2013 Please post bids to Peter McGowan: Nethergreen House, 9 The Green, Ruddington, Notts NG11 6DY Or email: [email protected], by Monday, 3 December 2013. Late entries cause extra work and will most likely be disregarded. Ensure you include your current address and contact details. If you are bidding by email, please make sure you have received his acknowledgement of receipt. Successful bidders living outside the UK will be asked to pay for their lots before despatch. If two bids of the same amount are received for a lot, then the bid received first will take precedence, so early bidding is desirable. All lots now carry reserves, either at a default value of 75% of the estimate or at an undisclosed figure set by the seller. No bid will be accepted below the reserve. Take into account that some of our estimated prices appear rather too modest, and may be well overbid.

NB: See the members’ page of our website for images of this material. For the first time we have scanned all items in the auction. There are no promises that this will be done every time!

RESULTS OF AUCTION #69 HELD ON 5 OCTOBER 2013

Our auctions secretariat was kept well occupied by thirteen members in attendance on the day and by bids arriving from 29 other members. We are sorry that eight of the postal bidders were unable to purchase anything, but there is more material in the pipeline for future auctions. Queen Victoria’s Windsor bookplate (smallest of the three sizes) went for four times estimate at £165, and for the same price another keen collector acquired the rare 17th century armorial for Scott of Kew and Normandy, at double estimate. Jessie M King’s wonderful plate for Fred Christie sold for £120 (estimate £70) and the second largest of John Pine’s four sizes of the imposing Cambridge University pictorial armorial was bid to £105 (estimate £40), the same buyer acquiring an excellent print of the 1698 Francis Gwyn early armorial for £80 at double estimate. Aubrey Beardsley’s pictorial for Mr Pollitt and his label for Frederick H Evans made £75 and £55 (each estimated at £40). More royal plates, for the Duchy of Cornwall and Carlton House, ran up to £73 and £46 (estimates £40 and £20). Anning Bell’s exlibris for Frederic Leighton sold for £58 (est £28), and Rackham’s pictorial for Lazarus fetched £54 (est £30). It was not all fireworks – 36 lots sold for £10 or less (at a total of £292 versus £350 estimate). In the middle range, 88 lots were sold at prices between £11 and £24 (total £1,515 against £1,022). Good value was obtained by purchasers of a number of lots comprising batches of two or more dozen items (armorials, crests, coloured gift plates, ladies, labels, and a group of military men left over from the Summer Web Auction). Our thanks are due to all participant and to our hard-working auctions secretary. Last-minute bids were accommodated only with difficulty, and in future the deadline for bidding will be the Monday prior to the Saturday auction.
