You and your peers are responsible for making the first 5-10 minutes class on Friday (and some Tuesdays) as productive as possible. How you may ask? Each of you will present an Enviro-News at the beginning of class. The guidelines for the presentation are below. Be sure you are prepared on the day you are scheduled to present; late presentations will receive half credit if it is one day late and zero credit thereafter!
My Enviro-News date is ______. Issues involving the environment have a profound impact on society and vise-versa. These issues frequently appear in the news. What environmental issues making the news today are important for your life and for the lives of people around the world? To explore this question, on the assigned day, you will present an environmental-related topic that has appeared recently in the news and that you believe has important ramifications for people’s lives and is related to the topics we are currently discussing in class.
For the Student Presenting: Where do I find the news report? o News reports must be published in printed form (no random internet sources…Time, Newsweek, on- line newspapers, journals etc are okay). Look in newspapers, magazines, journals etc. for articles that have appeared within two weeks of your presentation date. Do I need to find additional information? o Perhaps. If there is a concept presented that you are unsure of, LOOK IT UP! This will make your presentation much more comprehensive and enable you to better answer questions posed by your classmates. o The background information can be drawn from library reference resources, the internet, science journals, textbooks etc. How long should my presentation be? o You will present (not read from your article!) to the class for 5-7 minutes. After the presentation, your classmates and I will have the opportunity to ask you questions. What do I need to turn in? o Copy of the news report with your name, date of presentation and source of article printed on it. o Must turn in copy in advance so copies can be distributed in advance to the class. o Completed Science Reading Analysis sheet o This rubric Enviro News Excellent Competent Not Yet Failed or Not Done Rubric Information / Same as competent, but reading analysis small portion (1 ½ or reading analysis Science Reading also: thoughtfully completed fewer questions) of missing or Analysis sheet connects article to connects article to analysis is missing or incomplete environmental science environmental science weak as well as impacts/ knowledgeable about topic weak connection to repercussions on a info is correct enviro sci global scale currently discussed in class 15 15 10 5 0 Presentation Same as competent but student takes difficult to student does not also: presentation seriously understand at times take presentation is professional in speaks clearly able to answer some seriously presentation no gum chewing or questions posed by unable to answer able to answer all fidgeting audience questions posed by questions in detail answers most questions Article not provided audience Article relates to from audience in advance current topics Article does not relate Article submit 2d prior to current topics 5 3 2 0 5 Total =_____/20 Enviro-News Reading Analysis Sheet Name: ______Date: ______
