OFFICE OF HUMAN RESOURCES POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position: Associate Director for Catechist Certification and Enrichment/ and Union County Department: Catechetical Office Reports To: Ronald Pihokker, Director Classification: Exempt (Exempt or Non Exempt)

General Description The Associate Director, as a member of the Catechetical Office professional staff, is responsible for the on-going development of the Catechetical Ministry in the Archdiocese of Newark in the area of catechist certification, formation and on-going enrichment within the parishes and schools of the Archdiocese. (S)He acts as specialist, consultant and resource person also collaborating with the appropriate members of the various departments of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center. (S)He works as a team member with the Catechetical Office staff in discerning the areas of Catechetical Ministry development and coordination throughout the Archdiocese of Newark.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities The following specific responsibilities are representative of duties required in this position. They may be unilaterally but reasonably changed based on the working environment and departmental needs.  To develop and carry out a continuing plan for the development of Catechist Certification and Formation in the Archdiocese.  To assess needs, offer support and provide assistance to parish catechetical leaders in the areas of Catechist formation and certification.  To act as resource and contact person for parish staffs in the Archdiocese vis a vis the implementation of the catechetical policies relative to catechist certification and formation within the Archdiocese.  To provide workshops, retreat days, in-service sessions as required.  To collaborate with other members of the Archdiocesan Catechetical Office Staff in carrying forward the plans and programs of the Office.  To review print and audio-visual curricular materials for catechist certification and enrichment and oversee and make recommendations for the purchase of such materials in the resource libraries of the Catechetical Office.  To be the lead agent in the organization and presentation of the annual Catechist Convocation of the Archdiocese in its development, oversight and management and to interact with and direct the Convocation Committee.  To perform such other responsibilities as assigned by the Director.

Regional Responsibilities  To assess needs, offer support and provide assistance to parish catechetical leaders in Union County Parishes.  To act as resource and contact person for parish staffs of Union County parishes in the Archdiocese vis a vis the implementation of the catechetical policies within the Archdiocese.  To act as a “gateway”and point of contact between other Catechetical Office staff and the needs of parishes of Union County  To represent the Catechetical Office with the Union County Parish Catechetical Leaders group as assigned by the Director and assist in their organization, agenda development and programming.  To visit the parishes and schools of the Archdiocese as required in the fulfillment of the responsibilities set forth above. Catholic School Responsibilities

 To collaborate with the Office of the Superintendent of Schools and the Associate Director for Catechesis in the Catholic Schools in providing for the sharing of resources and assessing needs regarding certification/formation among the Catholic School faculties of the Archdiocese in collaboration with the Associate Director for Catechesis in the Catholic Schools.  To prepare and present programs for catechist certification and enrichment for Catholic School faculties 

Qualifications/Skills

 the applicant must possess excellent communication and organizational skills  Familiarity with computer applications is necessary, minimally a word processing program, preferably Microsoft Word.

Education and/or Experience

A Master’s degree in Catechetics, Theology, Education or a related field is required Minimally, five years experience in parish catechetics or classroom teaching is expected.
