Brigham Young University Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering CEEn 112 – Engineering Drawing with CAD Application Term Project Requirements – Winter 2007

Please read the following requirements VERY CAREFULLY. Each semester, one or more of the teams will neglect to adhere to these requirements and receive an unexpected low grade on their term project. Don’t let this happen to you! This document has four parts: 1) Requirements for the term project drawings, 2) Requirements for the term project report, 3) Drawings for display, and 4) Term project presentation file and text (Final exam). 1. Requirements for term project drawings are as follows:  The title block must be standardized on all drawings—design one for your group.  All plotted drawings must use the standardized border and title block (including rendered drawings).  Multiple drawings created by team members may be combined to create one large drawing. We can plot up to a D-size (22" x 34") drawing using the plotter available in 234 CB, however, please use this plotter only for making final plots for the semester-end display (Note: Most students use 8½ by 11 inch paper plots exclusively).  Freehand sketches for your AutoCAD® drawings must be drawn to coordinate term project work among the team members.  Each project must be presented in a professional manner with effort appropriate to meet the course objectives and requirements.  Besides the basic lines and curves, you must use the following features of AutoCAD® as a team (i.e., one drawing may not contain all of these features but as a team you must use them all): 1. Layers, 2. Multi-color lines, 3. Multi-text styles, (Optional, depends on your project) 4. Dimensions, 5. Texts, 6. Hatching, 7. Arrays, 8. Blocked objects or external references, 9. Attribute blocks (the title block, other applications will be optional), and 10. Two or more 3D drawings (you will notice that every member will want to produce a 3D drawing because they are the most fun!).

2. Requirements for term project written report are as follows:  Each team will prepare one report for their group. The group leader should divide the task of report writing (please ensure consistency in style and format throughout the report). Sample reports will be available for review from the secretaries in the CE En Department office (368 CB).  Your term project report MUST contain the following items: 1. Cover sheet, 2. Introduction - make sure you state in the Introduction what the report offers, 3. Description of the topic, 4. Division of the tasks among the team members, 5. Problems encountered and their solutions (if any) – include both technical and team work management problems, 6. Features used in creating AutoCAD® drawings – have each team member describe the features that were used, 7. Meeting records and discussions on time spent for the meetings and drawing preparations, Page 2

8. Appendix A – freehand drawings, and 9. Appendix B – AutoCAD® drawings (include all drawings).  You may insert AutoCAD® drawings in the main body of the report to help clarify your discussions (be sure to reference them in the text), but you MUST have all your drawings in Appendix B.  The maximum length of the body of the report (Item 2 through 7) is 15 pages; while the minimum is 10 pages (please number pages). The body of the report must be double-spaced using either 11- or 12-pt. font. Be sure to include conclusions and a separator page for the Appendices.  You must e-mail me a file containing a rendered 3D model with an image in the background (.jpeg, .bmp image et cetra). Note: The deadline for submitting TP reports is 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, 2007. 3. Requirements for term project display in the CB Student Lounge are as follows:  An HP Plotter for large paper plots can be found in Room 234CB (where we have lectures). You can plot up to Size D of the American National Standard Institute and Size A1 of the International Standard. Yes, it is a color plotter on a glossy paper. Please use this plotter only for the final display drawings as desired. (Your term project report does not have to have large drawings, most students use A size drawings exclusively – see the size chart below.) Note: plotting from the color plotter in Room 234CB costs $15/plot regardless of the paper size you use. Due to the cost of plotting with the color plotter be sure to check your drawing to see if it is really ready for plotting, or use A-size paper and plot from the color printer in 425 CB.

 Regardless of the size of paper you use, please mount the plots on a thin poster board, or if the plot is larger than 22" x 26", I would recommend that you laminate it. Arrange the drawings to attract viewers' attention. It is a good idea to place them on a color poster board to let your drawing sheets stand out from the display partition. You will have an opportunity to see sample displays in Room 234 CB.  Prepare a separate letter-sized paper that shows your team name (e.g., Smith & Smith Associates) and the names of team members.  Prepare a second sheet showing the title of your term project (e.g., Dream House, Pyramid, Dream Dorm, Joe’s Bridge, etc.).  You will have an area 8 feet (width) by 6 feet (height)—the typical size of the partitions BYU has. This is enough space for four large poster boards (22'' by 26''). You MUST have at least two 22” by 26” poster boards. Please avoid really large poster boards—it is difficult to hang them on the partitions.  You must supply at minimum 3 color prints of 3D objects (three views of one 3D drawing, or several 3D drawings). One of them must have a background image (with a perspective view of the model). Note: The deadline for submitting TP display materials is 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2007. Please hang your displays by yourself on the display panels that will be available in the south end of the CB Lounge. The instructor will prepare pins and place them near the entry to the display area. 4. Term project presentation (Final exam), 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., Sat, April 21, 2007. This presentation will take place in the classroom.  There WILL be in-class presentations of the term projects during the final exam time period. Two teams will also be asked to present their work on a regular class hour. See the Lecture Schedule web page.  Your presentation must be prepared using presentation software (i.e., PowerPoint or Corel Presentation). You can have up to 20 slides in your presentation file including the title slide and the

concluding slide. You should aim to have between 15 and 20 slides. The TAs can show you how to use the presentation software if you are unfamiliar with it.  Your presentation file must be e-mailed to Dr. Saito by the final exam date as part of your final presentation. I am keeping presentation files by the students for my records. If the file is too big for electronic transfer, please provide it to me on a zip disk or CD and I will make a copy.
