Ronald Reagan: A Hero for Life! By: Abigail Kirkland – Director of Education and Public Relations at GRTL
As the nation mourns the death of President Ronald Reagan, there are countless voices singing thanks for what he has done.
Reagan, a champion for the causes he believed in, became a hero for life when he created the Mexico City Policy, which has been credited with saving untold thousands of lives of unborn children. He was the only sitting president to write a book, “Abortion and the Conscious of a Nation,” while in office in which he writes:
“We cannot diminish the category of one human life – the unborn – without diminishing the value of all human life… The American people have not had an opportunity to express their view on the sanctity of human life in the unborn. I am convinced that Americans do not want to play God with the value of human life. It is not for us to decide who is worthy to live and who is not.”
Reagan’s view on abortion was not grounded in hatred or by a “man forcing his morality on women,” but grounded in a sincere love and compassion for the mother and her unborn child. He knew what many are only realizing today: abortion actually hurts women.
Reagan truly was a champion for life, and although Nancy Reagan has asked President George W. Bush to rescind his policy of preventing federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, this request would likely go against her husband’s wishes because his stance for life included opposing the use of federal tax dollars to fund abortions.
In loving memory of this great man, all Americans should say thanks. Thanks for protecting innocent lives across the country when few were willing to take that stand. Don Hodel, who served as Secretary of the Interior and Security of Energy under Reagan states, “If an advisor tried to persuade Reagan by discussing the electoral implications of a decision, the president was quick to cut him off by saying, ‘You’re talking politics. I want to know what you think is right.’”
As the primaries draw near, let us get out to the polls and elect more leaders like Ronald Reagan. Men and women who are willing to forego “electoral implications” and vote on “what is right!” Everyday in America 3,805 babies are killed through abortions. Consequently, there are 3,805 reasons to get off the couch on July 20th and carry on Reagan’s legacy. Become a hero for LIFE!
