Advanced Algebra Syllabus 2016-2017

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this course is that students learn math in context and experience skills intermixed with applications. This Course will cover seven units which will be completed over an 18-week semester. The unit topics covered are as follows and will be discussed following the frameworks established by the state of Georgia Standards of Excellence. Unit 1: Quadratics Revisited Unit 2: Operations with Polynomials Unit 3: Polynomial Functions Unit 4: Rational and Radical Relationships Unit 5: Exponential and Logarithms Unit 6: Mathematical Modeling Unit 7: Inferences and Conclusions from Data.

SUGGESTED SUPPLIES: 3 ring binder (at least 1 inch) with 4 dividers, PENCILS, paper, red pen, ruler, graph paper, notebook paper, calculator

*It is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED that each student have access to a scientific or graphing calculator (TI-83+ or TI-84+) with the ability to do square roots, fractions, and decimals. This calculator would benefit you throughout high school & college.

NOTEBOOK: It is suggested that each student will keep a math binder with 4 dividers. The dividers should be labeled NOTES, CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK, TESTS/QUIZZES, and OPENERS/CLOSERS. Students are also expected to have their laptops with them in class every day.

ATTENDANCE: Students need to participate in daily activities in order to learn and succeed; therefore, it is essential to be in class EVERY day!

MAKEUP WORK: If a student is absent from class (as explained in the student handbook), he/she is responsible for getting the work that was missed and turning it in following the guidelines set forth in the student handbook.

TUTORING: Tutoring will be offered every Wednesday afternoon from 3:30 until 5:00. This is a time for you to get extra help with concepts being covered in class. It is very important to stay on track as everything in math builds upon prior knowledge. See me if you are struggling but cannot attend tutoring and I will work with you.

CHEATING: Any cheating or academic dishonesty will result in a zero grade and an office referral.

GRADES will be divided such that Standards/Competency Based Assessments count 80% and the Final Exam/EOCT counts 20%. In semester courses, grades will be finalized and credits earned in December and May. PLEASE take advantage of Infinite Campus for keeping up with your grades and attendance on a regular basis! EXPECTATIONS: All school rules (as outlined in the student handbook) are in effect in my classroom. Further, I will expect the following:

1.) Show respect for yourself and others at all times. (Stay on task. Do not interfere with learning or teaching. Do not engage in the use of profanity or verbal abuse.) 2.) Bring your supplies to class daily (this includes laptop, notebook, pencil, and paper). 3.) Keep the classroom and desks clean and organized. 4.) No eating or drinking in class except drinks with a lid. 4.) Cellular devices are not allowed to be out in class unless I ask you to take them out for a specific reason pertaining to the day’s activity.

Violation of these or any other expectations set forth in the classroom will result in immediate disciplinary action. Remember… You are responsible for you!

Again, I look forward to a successful school year with each of you. This requires that we all work together and support each other to reach a common goal. Should you have any questions or comments at any time, please feel free to speak with me at any time or contact me via written message, or email.
