40 HOUR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TRAINING- Mid Central Community Action’s Countering Domestic Violence Program will be offering its 40 hour Domestic Violence training on July 26th through August 4th, 2017 from 12pm-5pm. The training is open to individuals and professionals interested in gaining a better understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence, identifying red flags, helping and supporting survivors of domestic violence. Abraham Lincoln in Illinois: Favorite 8½ Court Cases Don Chamberlain will discuss Lincoln’s practice as a circuit rider and his work on local cases outside of the 8th Judicial Circuit — in federal court, in the Illinois Supreme Court, and in the U.S. Supreme Court. This program will demonstrate the breadth of cases in which Lincoln was involved and the types of arguments he made. He participated in cases both for and against slave owners and both for and against the developing railroad companies of his day. Many of his cases set legal precedence for years to come. Mr. Lincoln will give historical background and talk about events that led him back into politics in the mid-1850s, the increase in tensions, and of course the Civil War. You'll hear directly from some of Mr. Lincoln's best-known speeches and writings at 1:30pm in the Community Room. This program will be followed by a 15-minute Q&A session with the presenter. Lincoln’s Self-Education in the Liberal Arts Illinois Wesleyan University's Colwell Professor of English Emeritus, Robert Bray will provide a look at the books that made the deepest impression on Lincoln's young mind (roughly ages 12-21), offering examples from the texts. These will range from crucial primary sources like the Declaration of Independence and the U. S. Constitution, to important state speeches such as Washington's valedictory address to the country, as well as a range of more general topics in science, literature and religion. Preserving Practice: Tomatoes & Tomato Products University of Illinois Extension is bringing you, Preserving Practice: Tomatoes & Tomato Products. This program will be held on July 17, 2017 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Illinois State University in Turner Hall, 700 W. College Ave., Normal, in the Food Science Lab (room 131). Lincoln’s Festival on Route 66 events set for July 14 - 16 Bloomington-Normal will celebrate its connections to two elements of area history with Lincoln’s Festival on Route 66 July 14 through 16. The weekend will focus on Trails, Rails & Roads while highlighting the community’s many connections to Abraham Lincoln and historic Route 66 with activities at seven different locations. Most events are free.

“Encounters with Lincoln’s Bloomington” will be hosted in Downtown Bloomington Friday evening with living history performances by the Historic Acting Troupe between 5 and 8 p.m. Performances will be held simultaneously at the McLean County Museum of History, Heritage Plaza, and the Ensenberger Condominium lobby.

The McLean County Museum of History will also host activities on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, Greg Koos will lead a walking tour of Downtown Bloomington, and Abraham Lincoln (portrayed by Kevin Wood) will visit with young people. Terri Ryburn and Mike Matejka will present Pioneer Pathways to Route 66 in McLean County, and Dr. James Cornelius will discuss From History to Hollywood. Sunday afternoon, the Museum will feature a talk on Grids: Travel in a Prairie Place by Greg Koos. Visitors of all ages can participate in scavenger hunts and trivia games featuring Lincoln and Route 66 on both days.

The David Davis Mansion State Historic Site will feature a vintage bicycle show on Saturday including presentations by bicycle historians Dr. Thomas Burr and Christopher Sweet. The Mansion will also be open for tours. An ice cream social and concert featuring the 33rd Illinois Volunteer Regiment Band will be held from 5 to 7 p.m.

Franklin Park will be another hub of activity on Saturday. The Bloomington-Normal Jaycees will host a car show around the park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Presentations about the roads and rails in Lincoln’s day by Guy Fraker, and train travel at the turn of the 20th century by Jim Matthews will be offered, as well as a discussion on Lincoln, education and the law by Kevin Wood (as Mr. Lincoln). Performances by the Clinton Uke Crazies band, plus games and activities for children will also be offered. Picnic food will be available for purchase at the Park.

Bloomington Public Library will offer Lincoln-themed activities Friday, Saturday and Sunday including films, make-it-take-it crafts, a presentation by Kevin Wood (as Mr. Lincoln) about Lincoln’s observations on slavery and its effect on the country, and another by Dr. Robert Bray about Lincoln’s self-education in the liberal arts. Period music will be performed by Dale Evans and by the Orpheus Mandolin Orchestra.

The lawn of the Ames Library at Illinois Wesleyan University (corner of East and Empire Streets) will be the site of an encampment by the 10th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can learn about life in the cavalry, as well as Civil War-era weapons and medical treatment. Troop skirmishes will be held both days at this site.

The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts will host two special ticketed events on Saturday. The Disney Pixar “Cars” movie will be shown at 4 p.m. and the Cornerstones of Rock concert will be presented at 7 p.m. For ticket details, call 309-434-2777.

Abraham Lincoln will be portrayed by Kevin Wood at various venues on Saturday and Sunday. Carriage, wagon and trolley rides will be available at specified locations between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Lincoln’s Festival on Route 66 is a 2017 Looking for Lincoln Signature Event, and is also a Signature Event for the Illinois Route 66 Red, White and Blue Corridor highlighting the heritage of Route 66 in Illinois.

MCLP Opening Reception The public is invited to attend the opening reception for Multicultural Leadership Program Class of 2018, to be held on Thursday, July 20, 2017 from 4 – 5 p.m. at the Heartland Community College Astroth Community Education Center.

The Multicultural Leadership Program is a local nonprofit which conducts one leadership development cohort each year from July through March. Participants must be 21 or older, live or work in McLean County, and should be in some current leadership role. Throughout the program, participants meet an average of two times a month to learn leadership concepts. In September they are also assigned in teams to work on projects for local nonprofits. Volunteer Opportunities:

The West Bloomington Active Garden is a collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club, the YWCA and Labyrinth. The program aims to provide fresh, organic, and local produce to Bloomington’s west side community, designated a “food desert” by the USDA. The WB Active Garden provides hands on educational programs for children K-5. The students learn the importance of organic and sustainable gardening practices and take home the produce they have grown. In addition, free garden plots are available to the public, volunteers are needed and donations are accepted.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and maintain the garden beds that won’t be used by individual community members. No gardening experience is necessary.

DONATIONS ACCEPTED. Donations of new or gently used garden equipment, seeds, plants and gift cards or funds to buy garden supplies are welcome.
