SUMMER 2013 NEWSLETTER SLIFG future events Film and exhibition launch on Tuesday 16 July at 6.15pm in Southwark Cathedral! WALKING AND TALKING: inter faith walks in south London exhibition will be launched at 6.15pm in the retro-choir (in the cathedral at London Bridge SE1 9DA). Come and watch a 15 minute film which might inspire you to organise your own inter faith walk where you live! There will also be chance to see an exhibition of the walks in 2012 and over the years (see below). Light drinks and nibbles will be available. Evening Prayer in the cathedral is from 5.30 pm – 6.00 pm if you wish to be present beforehand.

Tuesday 16-Sunday 28 July, Southwark Cathedral, south transept Come and see an exhibition in words and pictures of inter faith walks organised by SLIFG in different corners of Southwark Diocese across south London since 1997. Bring your friends and spread the word.

We hope the exhibition will travel the city and the country as a showcase of what’s possible and an inspiration too! A film will also be available.

Look out for July edition of the Southwark Diocese newspaper ‘the Bridge’ with its centrespread on the 13 inter faith walks!

There is the possibility of a Ramadan iftar (breaking of the fast) at the end of July to which all SLIFG are invited. It will probably to be held at Hyderi Islamic Centre, 26 Estreham, SW16 5PQ. Keep an eye on the website: http://www.southlondoninterfaith.org.uk/

We are also hoping to show the exhibition at City Hall, Tower Bridge during national Inter Faith Week (which runs from Sunday 17 to Saturday 23 November) TBA, check the website.

Lambeth country show The Lambeth Country Show takes place in Brockwell Park on Saturday and Sunday, 20th and 21st July, 11am – 7pm. Like last year, SLIFG will be working with Faiths Together in Lambeth and other groups to have an Inter Faith Stall in the Charities Area. Do come and see us if you are visiting the Show and, if you could spend an hour or so at the stall, do let Alan Gadd know at [email protected]

Other possible future events Possible visit to Korean Buddhist temple and Tamil Hindu Mandir, Kingston-upon-Thames in the autumn TBA– again keep an eye on the website. Monthly lunchtime meetings SLIFG holds simple lunchtime meetings on the last Thursday of each month at Streatham Friends Meeting House, Redlands Way, Roupell Park Estate, Brixton Hill, SW2 3LU. A vegetarian lunch is served at 12.30pm then from 1pm to 2pm a chance to share inter faith news and experiences, and discuss any matters of current concern to SLIFG. Next meetings are: 27 June, 25 July, 29 August, and 26 September. For more information and if you can come contact Alan Gadd: [email protected], 8678-8977. Meetings are well-received, generally with a theme and sometimes a speaker.

Other events Jewish Music Then and Now A special concert held in association with Streatham Festival: Jewish Music Then and Now. We will be joined by Cantor Gershon Silins, composer and performer Dean Staker and Franklyn Gellnick for a musical journey. This will be held at South London Liberal Synagogue on Sunday 14th July at 7pm. Please email [email protected] if you would like to reserve tickets (£10 each).

SLIFG news AGM held on Sunday 10 March at Trinity Hospice, Clapham Common – thanks to Michael Savage and our kind hosts for a successful AGM again at the hospice, in which we saw a 20 minute film of the inter faith walks last summer and heard news of planned ‘legacy’ events this year (see above). We also enjoyed seeing an exhibition of the walks with photos and reports. We then shared a large spread of food and further news. The 2013/14 committee elected are: Rashid Laher (Secretary), Ebrahim Rashid (Treasurer), Alan Gadd (membership), Rizwan Alibhai, Helen Bailey, Balbir Singh Bakhshi, Tima Beckett, Ganesh Lall, Thelma Lewis and welcome to James Peel. Sarah Thorley and Siriol Davies have been again co-opted. Grateful thanks go to Sally Smith who has stood down after two faithful years of service, although continues involvement. Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Muslim and Sikh faith traditions are represented on the current committee.
