MGMT 4750 Strategic Management SYLLABUS

Summer, 2012

This syllabus should be used by students taking MGMT 4750 during the Summer semester, 2012.

Important Notes Applicable to the Summer 2012 Semester

(1) The summer session is an abbreviated short session, but has the same amount of content as the MGMT 4750 classes that meet during the fall and spring semesters. It is definitely recommended that you do not take more than two courses (including MGMT 4750) when taking this course.

(2) This is your capstone course. It is imperative that you begin reading the text and working any applicable assignments before you attend the first day of class.

(3) Required Computer Competencies: MGMT 4750 requires extensive use of GaView, Microsoft Word®, and PowerPoint. Exams are GaView based. Each CSU student is required to have ready access throughout the semester to a notebook computer that meets faculty-approved hardware and software requirements for the student’s academic program. See http://itpchoice.clayton.edu for full details of this policy.

(4) As you will also note, either the ETS Exam or the College of Business Fundamentals Exam will be given in MGMT 4750 during the summer, 2012. This is a two hour exam that will be given during the final exam period.

(5) Punctuality is always important. Classes will begin promptly and attendance will be taken at the beginning of class. Since this class is a short session, you can not afford to miss any classes.

(6) Dress code: sunglasses and caps, including du rags, are not to be worn in class. You will be required to dress in appropriate business presentation attire for your team presentations.

(7) Class participation is 5% of your final grade. Your class participation grade will be reduced 10% for every class meeting that you miss.

(8) You are expected to take the exams on the dates on which they are given. Failure to take an exam on the scheduled exam date, without previous approval from the professor, will result in a “0” grade for that exam. Any exam taken after the scheduled exam for any reason will result in an automatic 20% deduction on that exam.

(9) Always check your e-mail on a daily basis for any messages or announcements relevant to the course. E-mails will be sent through campus e-mails and not through GaView.

Course Requirements and Expectations:

1. Class and Team Participation: Class sessions will focus on application of concepts and skill building. The delivery will be experiential, with a minimum of lecture. Students are expected to complete the required reading, chapter quiz, and pre-class assignment prior to each class according to the course schedule. Regular, punctual class attendance and active participation in class and team activities will be essential to the learning experience. Participation will be assessed through a peer evaluation process.

2. Weekly Quizzes: Knowledge of concepts from the bi-weekly chapter reading assignments will be assessed by graded quizzes administered through GaView. The quizzes will be “open book” and timed. Quizzes usually expire at 11:59 p.m. preceding the class discussion, but refer to the syllabus and GaView to be sure.

3. Course Content Exams: There will be two scheduled exams during the semester. Exams will be closed book and will include assigned text chapters and material covered in class. Each exam will assess knowledge, comprehension, and application of key concepts. Exam dates are firm. If the exam will be missed, the student must notify the professor in advance and provide written documentation for the absence. An excused absence for medical reasons requires a written excuse from a doctor’s office. The professor reserves the right to exercise his personal judgment in allowing make-up exams and deducting points for exams taken after the published exam date.

4. Foundation  Business Simulation: Students will apply the strategic management process and integrate knowledge from previous coursework by running a company as part of a management team, competing against other companies in simulation. Most Thursday classes will be devoted to working in teams reviewing results of the simulation, making decisions related to strategy, and executing tactics.

An absence does not relieve the student of responsibility for knowledge of classroom materials, examinations, cases, assignments and/or the submission of any report(s), etc., nor the consequences of a late submission. Students are responsible for obtaining notes, from other students or from the network if available, for any class missed and for all assignments made or due during absence.

Students are required to take all exams and complete all assignments by the specified date. Students who miss class due to work, illness, or other valid reasons must notify the professor prior to the missed sessions.

· Absence from class when an assignment is announced is not an acceptable excuse. Assignments are due at the beginning of the class after being announced. Late assignments will be accepted one class period after the announced assignment due time and date; however, an automatic 20% reduction for that assignment will be taken before the assignment is graded.

Attendance in class is mandatory if your goal is to complete this course successfully. NOTE: Earning an A is not possible if you have two absences or “come late/leave early” incidents.

Class Participation and Homework: Students are encouraged to ask questions to clarify understanding and to discuss and debate the theories, principles, and concepts from the text, case studies, and lectures. Students will be expected to participate in class and will be called upon on a regular basis.
