Dear English Major

Dear English Major--

Did you know the English Department has scholarships for our majors?

I would like to encourage each of you to apply and take advantage of these scholarship opportunities. Remember the deadline is 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2016. Mark your calendars.

There are two ways to apply: Nomination & Application.

First, Nomination: Two scholarships are nominations only (the Eggers and Williams scholarships). Go out and ask an English professor whose class you did well in to nominate you.

They are:

Graydon and Daisy Eggers Scholarship Student must be a rising junior or senior or a graduating senior planning to enroll in English graduate studies at Appalachian; minimum GPA 3.0; 3.5 in English.

Cratis Williams Scholarship Student must be a rising junior, a rising senior, or a graduate student in English deemed worthy of the award by the English Scholarship Committee.

Second, Application: If you meet these criteria, you should apply.

They are:

Jeni Gray Memorial Scholarship: Student must be an undergraduate English major and a person of exceptional integrity and distinguished academic achievement. Department of English Scholarship: Student must be a deserving English major who is already enrolled. Ella Hobbs Scholarship for English Majors: Student must be a rising junior or senior full time English major with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Mary Montgomery Dunlap Scholarship in English: Applicants must be juniors, seniors, or graduate students during the award year majoring in English, show a verifiable need for financial support and satisfactory academic achievement (minimum 3.0 GPA). Henree Rupp Study Abroad Scholarship for the English Department: Applicants must be majors or graduate students in English and enrolled in a university study abroad program. Criteria shall include merit, promise, and financial need. The study abroad program may be for summer study, ISEP, or a sponsored exchange with a foreign university for a semester or a year. Dr. Hans G. Heymann Scholarship for English “Honor” Students: Applicants must demonstrate and maintain satisfactory academic potential and/or achievement, be a rising junior or senior, be a declared English major and enrolled in the honors program. Kate Peterson Scholarship: any English major who will be enrolled full time in 2016-17; selection based on GPA and writing sample Both forms are online at http://www.english.appstate.edu under the link for “Scholarships and Awards.”

As you can see, there are many different scholarships. So there is no reason you shouldn’t find at least one you can apply for or be nominated for.

Now get out there and apply. You are welcome to stop by my office anytime for more details or help.

Best,

Colin Ramsey
