Calendar for Winter Quarter

 January 8th: Student Group Fair, Noon – 1 pm  Board agreed to put together a list of past events, list of upcoming events, and a membership package of sorts for interested members: will include a sheet the describes membership benefits, membership form, description of fees, and website address.  A description of the club, plus a better description of “Biotech / Pharma” should be included to hand out to interested parties. Dimple has put together a description of Biotech / Pharma that will help to also explain the club’s objectives, and will pass around to the board members in order to garner feedback. Once this is finalized, the Board can put together a brochure for the Student Fair – can be in color, printed in tri-fold format if desired, and be printed out at Kinko’s the morning of the Fair. Maria said that she would be able to help with this.  At the moment, all Board members are available to be present at the Student Fair. We may only need for 3 members to be present due to limited space.

 January 15th: Entrepreneurship Panel, 4-6 pm  Tentative agenda for this event is as follows: 4:00 – Announcements from BioPharma club 4:10 – 5:15 – Program / Panel 5:15 – Start Q&A 5:30 – 6:00 – Networking for those interested  Right now, Maria has confirmed 4 speakers for the panel. She is working on getting a moderator confirmed for the event. The thought is to invite Jason Heltzer from OCA Ventures, but Maria will confirm.  It was decided that we will have water, soda, cookies, and brownies available for this event. Jaideep will look into the menu / costs.  Costs: For members who sign up in advance, admission is free. For non-members who sign up in advance, admission will be set at $5 or $6. At the door, members will need to pay $3, and non-members will need to pay $10. Jaideep will help set up a registration page on the GSBBP website so the interested students can register beforehand.  All present agreed that publicity for this event must start early to ensure good attendance. The first e-mail will be sent out by Dimple for this event by 12/28, once the registration page is set up. Dimple will also send out an e-mail at this time to the GSB community with a “Summary of Events” listing for GSBBP. Maria will assist writing the description and language to market this event.  For this panel, Maria asked if we could possibly reserve a “flat room”, not one that has stadium seating. She anticipates that we will 30-40 people attend, and wanted to try for Room 100, or a room on the 5th floor of Gleacher.  Arun sent out an e-mail to the Alumni Roundtable to see if there was any interest in sponsorship of the entrepreneurship event. He also contacted the Entrepreneurship club (Part- Time GSB program), and apparently, they hardly have any members or funds, so they would not be able to help us out with co-sponsorship of this event.  Dimple brought up the idea of inviting prospective students to this event (and some of our other events too). She will try to get a list of e-mails / contact information for these prospective students from the Evening Office, so that we can send invites to them.

 January 20th: Midway Club Event, 8:30 – 10 pm  Dimple spoke to Jill, Nina’s assistant, about this event. Apparently, GSBBP can participate in this social event at no cost, and have been asked to come up with an idea for a theme by the Evening Office.  The organizers of the event will do the bulk of the marketing for the event. Attendees will also get one drink ticket. This is another event that may be a good one for which prospective students are invited – it is a good chance for informal networking.  The Board threw around some ideas – such as inviting some industry speakers, alumni, and faculty (like Scott Meadow) to speak on behalf of Biotech / Pharma issues that are current and of interest to students. The Board members, during break, will each think of theme ideas to share during the next Board meeting.

 January / February / March: Daphne Pruess, Science Bootcamp for GSB  Dimple has been speaking with Daphne on and off in the past few weeks. Daphne is very enthusiastic about holding these bootcamp sessions and suggested that they be presented in both a technical / non-technical fashion to attract a wider audience. She apparently already has quite a bit of material already prepared on the non-technical aspects, and would like to perhaps co-host a session or invite another faculty member to speak about very technical scientific topics.  Daphne has helped to set up two start-up companies already and has worked quite closely with Scott Meadow. One idea is to invite Scott to speak with Daphne in a bootcamp session so that scientific / industry / and business topics are all covered. Topics that Daphne thinks are important to teach include: industry lingo, basic science knowledge, managing scientists in a very technical setting, etc.  The dates that Daphne personally has available are: 1/22, 1/29, 2/19, 3/5 and 3/12. The Board wanted to strike out 3/12, as that is finals week for students. 3/5 may also be difficult as many students will be attending review sessions for finals and winding down the quarter. The other dates should all be feasible.  Instead of the originally-proposed lunchtime hour, the Board decided that holding these sessions between 4 – 6 pm on Saturdays makes the most sense. Also, so that students do not feel overloaded, the Board decided to hold 3 bootcamp sessions in the Winter Quarter, and 3 sessions in the Spring Quarter. Dimple will confirm that these times work for Daphne.  Jaideep will look into menu items and budget for these bootcamp sessions.

 Week of February 7th: MIDTERMS

 February 15th: Kellogg Social Event, Evening  Arun has been speaking with Scott Meyers from Kellogg’s Biotech group. They are interested in co-hosting a social event for Kellog / U of C students. Kellogg has also offered to pitch in $250 and split the cost of holding this event. The thought was to hold the event at a bar in the near north side of Chicago (Lincoln Park / Lakeview area) where both sets of students can meet. Depending on how this is structured, the funds can be used towards space rental, appetizers, or reduced price on drinks at a cash bar. The question is, can we also contribute a sum of $250? What is our budget for this event?  Arun also had the idea of hosting this event as part of the “B-School Tuesday.” He has been speaking to Bhaji about this, who is the sole organizer of all B-School Tuesdays. Bhaji can help us out with finding a good, cheap locale, and marketing the event to a wide audience. His events usually draw close to 100 students each time. Arun will speak to Bhaji about this – what will he do for us, and what will be GSBBP’s responsibility?  Another option that was discussed was to go through the Evening Office and possibly reserve the Midway Club for this event. Dimple suggested that we put together a proposal for funds, event hosting, and that we consider holding it on a Friday / Saturday night to attract more part-time students.

 Late Feb / Early March: Steve Burill, 4-6 pm on Saturday  Maria is currently working with Steve Burill’s assistant to plan which weekend would be best to have him come and speak to the GSB students at Gleacher. The thought was to hold this speaker’s event in the evening to allow for more time: for Q&A, networking, etc.  Once Maria has confirmed the time / date with Steve Burill, she will need Dimple to help her get a room reserved. Jaideep will also look into possible refreshments.

 February 19th / February 26th: Member’s Meeting, 12-1 pm on Saturday  During the meeting, Dimple brought up the fact that the bylaws of the club mention that we must have a members’ meeting at least once a quarter. She suggested that we hold one on Saturday, February 26th from 12 – 1 pm, with lunch for the members. If there is no Bootcamp scheduled for February 19th, we will hold the meeting on that day.  Jaideep will look into the lunch menu for the meeting. Jaideep and Sachi will look into putting together a members’ packet – possible t-shirts / mugs / pens / magazines / subscriptions to Internet sites. Maria brought up the idea of possibly giving members discounts to Kellogg Biotech events also. All board members will come up with ideas for the next meeting.  The subject of business cards was brought up – Jaideep had looked into this before. Apparently, we can get a full box of cards for $20, but we’ll need a logo to submit the order. No members have submitted any logo ideas, and Jaideep plans to re-send the contest rules as soon as Winter Quarter starts up again. If the contest does not work this time, perhaps there is a graphic artist, or someone in the computing department who can help us with a graphic design. Jaideep will look into this further once the logo contest comes to a close.

 During Autumn Quarter, the Board had come up with the idea of a Headhunter teleconference call – since we were not able to conduct this in the Fall, the question was raised as to whether we should pursue this during Winter Quarter. Most members of the Board felt that this event should be held during the Spring Quarter, since our Winter calendar seems quite full already. We could very tentatively plan to host a teleconference of some sort this Quarter – the topic to be determined by GSBBP members at the next members’ meeting.

 At the end of the conference call, the Board decided to proceed with elections during the next members’ meeting in February. Four of the VP positions will be open for election, and Dimple plans to stay on as President of GSBBP. The details of how the election will be conducted, eligibility, Board member roles & responsibilities, etc. will be discussed during the next Board meeting.
