Interprets the buttons and symbols on the system controller 3. Demonstrates a system controller self test and verbalizes reasons for performing this test 4. Explains the significance of the system controller battery module 5. Estimates battery time remaining using battery fuel guage for 14V Li-Ion batteries 6. Verbalizes the significance of the RED HEART alarm 7. Verbalizes how to troubleshoot a RED HEART alarm 8. Verbalizes the significance of a RED BATTERY alarm 9. Verbalizes the significance of a YELLOW BATTERY alarm 10. Describes the steps to perform cardioversion/defibrillation 11. Verifies two power sources connected to VAD at all times. 12. Demonstrates how to convert patient to battery power source. 13. Demonstrates how to apply battery holster to patient and how to connect batteries to battery clips. 14. Demonstrates how to convert patient to electrical outlet power source. 15. Verifies Heartmate two electrical sockets are plugged into red sockets. 16. Demonstrates how to program the backup System Controller using the following steps: a. Access the patient’s backup System Controller (typically stored in their black bag with backup batteries, etc.). b. Change patient to battery power . c. Attach the backup system controller to the power cables attached to the PBU. d. Using the System Monitor touch screen, go to Settings. e. Assess fixed and low speed; see if these settings match the label on the back side of the backup System Controller. f. Disconnect the backup System Controller from the PBU. g. If changes were made, write the fixed & low speed settings on a piece of tape & secure it to the backup System Controller. h. Place System Controller in patient’s black bag. i. Document date, time and settings in HED. 17. Demonstrates how to replace a System Controller using the following steps: a. Rotate the perc lock on the replacement controller to the fully unlocked position. b. Repeat this for the original controller. c. Attach the power leads on the replacement controller to the battery clips. d. Place fully charged batteries into battery clips. e. Press the Silence Alarm button on the replacement controller to silence the RED HEART alarm for 2 minutes. f. Disconnect the perc lead from the original controller by pressing the metal release tab on the connector socket. The pump will stop and a continuous alarm will sound. Note: the alarm will continue until power is removed from the original controller. Getting the replacement controller connected and the pump restarted is the first priority. Lining up the mark on the perc lead connector with the mark on the metal tab of the replacement controller. g.ii. Fully insert the connector into the socket of the replacement controller. The pump should restart & alarm stop. h. Identify two methods to start the pump and verbalizes how to assess that the pump has been restarted.
