Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 1 of 16 TREK CHECK 1. Who is God? God is holy, pure, the Creator of everything. Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2. Who am I? I am made in God’s image. We reflect God. We have man of same attributes like ability to love. Genesis 1:27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 3. So what’s the problem? We are born sinners and we all sin. God hates sin. Our punishment is eternity in hell. Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 4. What’s the solution? God loves us so much that He sent His only Son to save us from our sin. He died on the cross and rose on the third day. He conquered death and paid the price for our sin. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 5. What’s next? We must trust Jesus as our Savior to spend eternity in heaven. Acts 16:31 Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved. 6. We can never lose our salvation. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 7. The greatest treasure is accepting God’s gift of salvation. Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 2 of 16 LESSON 1 Trek: journey on foot, especially in the mountains Israelites: the people chosen by God in the Old Testament, later known as Jews. Exodus: the Israelites’ departure from Egypt to Canaan, the land that God promised to them. Atoning sacrifice: the sacrifice of Jesus that perfectly satisfied God’s demand that sin be punished.

1 John 4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Exodus 15:11-13 (Moses victory song) Who among the gods is like You, O LORD? Who is like You – majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders? You stretched out Your right hand and the earth swallowed them. In Your unfailing love You will lead the people You have redeemed. In Your strength You will guide them to Your holy dwelling.

Read: Exodus 1:8-11 and 3:7-8 and summarize what happened to the Israelites. 1. What is your own map at the end of each lesson called? Memorial Stones 2. What are the guideposts for each lesson? The memory verses. 3. How many people walked across the desert? 600,000 men plus women and children (more than a million) 4. Instead of three months, the journey took 40 years. 5. What two things did God use to lead the people away from Egypt? A pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. 6. What sea did God lead them to? The Red Sea 7. The Israelites were between a rock and a hard place. What were they? The attacking Egyptian army and the Red Sea. 8. Why do you think God put them between a rock and a hard place? To test them, to teach them faith and trust in him. 9. How did God rescue them from the Egyptian army? He parted the sea. Only the Israelites were able to cross safely. Then God pulled he water back on the Egyptians. 10. Recite the verses taken from Moses’ victory song after God rescued the Israelites. 11. According to Exodus 13:21-22, 14:19,20,27-30, how did God show his love to the Israelites? (the pillar of cloud and fire never left them, the angel of the Lord and the cloud came between them and the Egyptians, when Moses stretched out his hand the sea went back in its place and the Egyptian army was swept into the sea.) 12. Moses reassured the Israelites: Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 3 of 16 “Do not be afraid, stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you: you need only to be still.” Exodus 13:13-14 Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 4 of 16 Lesson 2 Mercy - having compassion and pity on human misery

Psalm 145:9 The Lord is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made. Deuteronomy 8:2,3b Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commands. ….to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

God wants to know what’s in your heart; love and dependence on Him, or pride and dependence on yourself? Israelites complaining about the food. (selective memory loss) 1. How did Go show compassion for the Israelites in Exodus 16? God had compassion and send them quail (in the evening) and manna (in the morning). 2. What did manna look like? Thin flakes like frost on the ground 3. How much manna could they collect? An omer for each person 4. What happened if manna was left on the ground? It melted away 5. What happened if someone tried to save till next day? It was full of maggots and it began to smell 6. Why did He feed them this way? God wanted to show the Israelites that they were his people and that He cared for them. He wanted them to rely on Him. 7. How long did the Israelites eat manna? They ate the manna for 40 years. 8. What did God ask them to do to remember how He provided for them in the desert? God asked them to save some manna in a jar for the next generations to remember.

“The Lord said to Moses, “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, at twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.” Exodus 16:11-12

“This is what the Lord has commanded: Take one omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the desert when I bought you out from Egypt.” Exodus 16:32 Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 5 of 16 Lesson 3 Justice – doing what’s right and making wrong things right Slow to anger – God’s patience with sinful people

Isaiah 45:21b-22 ….there is no God apart from Me, a righteous God and Savior; there is none but Me. Turn to Me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. Micah 6:8 He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what dies the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Exodus 34:6 And He passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.”

1. According to Micah 6:8 what does God asks of us? He asks us to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God. 2. What was Korah’s complaint? He didn’t want Moses to lead Israel. 3. How many people were rebelling with Korah? 250 men 4. Why did God punish Korah and his men? He wanted to make him an example of what happens when we go against God’s Word. 5. How did God punish Korah and his men? The earth split under their feet and swallowed them up with all their belongings. 6. Does God still punish us in a big way like he did with Korah? When we believe God sent his Son to die on the cross for us, His blood totally covers us. Even if we did something super wrong, God only sees His Son Jesus when He looks at us, not our huge sin. 7. Why did God put up with people’s sin for a long time? He hopes that they will turn to Him in faith.

“They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far. The whole community is holy, everyone of them, and the Lord is with them. Why then, do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?: Numbers 16:3

“In the morning the Lord will show who belongs to Him and who is holy, and He will have that person come near Him.” Numbers 16:5

“They went down alive into the grave, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community.” Numbers 16:33 Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 6 of 16 LESSON 4 Provision – God’s care for us in all ways. Atoning sacrifice – the sacrifice of Jesus that perfectly satisfied God’s demand that sin be punished.

Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. 1 John 2:2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. Deuteronomy 1:30-31 The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as He did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the desert. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.

Jesus sacrifice means we can completely and forever be accepted by God. 1. List some ways that Deut. 1:30-31 talks about how God provided for the Israelites: a. fight for them b. carried them like a father carries his son. 2. List two ways that show how God provided for the Israelites: a. Manna, quail. b. A grateful attitude comes from understanding how God provides for you. God always provided for His people and He continues to do today. 3. Why did God allow for them to be in the desert without water? God wanted to show them how He can work through impossible situations. 4. How did God provide water for the Israelites at Horeb? Moses struck the rock at Horeb with his staff and water came out. 5. What did the Israelites not have that we have? One thing the Israelites did not have was Jesus, a real, living Savior. He payed the penalty of our sins and when God looks at us, He sees Jesus righteousness and purity.

“Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” Ex.17:3 Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 7 of 16 LESSON 5 Tabernacle – house of the Lord in the wilderness Christ – means “annointed” , a name for Jesus, which showed that He was the long awaited King and deliverer Son of Man – the Lord Jesus Christ Son of the Blessed – a respectful way to say “God”

John 14:9-10 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know Me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time. Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in Me? The words I say to you are not just My own. Rather it is the Father, living in Me, who is doing His work.” Mark 14:61b-62 Again the high priest asked Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

1. What similarities are there between God the Father and Jesus? Faithful, loving, providing, sociable (anything else in your books?)

2. What differences are there between God the Father and Jesus? King of universe, Savior of the world (willing to set aside omnipotence and be a servant) 3. What are the differences between how God appeared in the OT and how Jesus appeared in the NT? a. They could not see God, only His glory, in a cloud, a pillar of fire. They heard His words through the Moses and the prophets. b. Jesus walked among them and spoke to them directly.

God gave specific instructions about the house (tabernacle) He wanted Moses to make for Him (colors, lengths of cloth). It was portable since they were on the move. God was pleased with His home and entered it. He directed the Israelites with His constant presence. (by day cloud and fire by night) The cloud would move when the Israelites had to move. They could not see God face to face, because He was too holy and they were sinners.

List the characteristics God showed when He was in the cloud: His protection, orders, guidance, holiness, glory, leadership, and His presence.

“So the cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel during all their travels.” Exodus 40:38

“..and the Lord said to him, ‘Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see the Lord and many of them perish. Even the priest who approach the Lord, must consecrate themselves, or the Lord will break out against them.” Exodus 19:21-22 Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 8 of 16 LESSON 6 Temptation: a testing that God allows in order to see what is in our hearts. Fasting: refraining from eating in order to indicate reliance on God.

Philippians 2:5-8 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus, who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!

John 6:35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never go hungry, and he who believes in Me will never be thirsty.”

1. Explain Philippians 2:5-8 Jesus who is God became “God with us” taking the form of a human. He died on the cross for our sins and rose again. He is our living Savior. 2. Explain why Jesus said that He is the bread of life in John 6:35. He totally satisfies our spiritual hunger. 3. Give some examples when the number 40 was used in the Bible; Israelites wandered 40 years in the desert, Jesus fasted for 40 days, Moses stayed on the mountain for 40 days and nights, it rained for 40 days and nights on Noah’s ark, Elijah traveled for 40 days and nights to Horeb. 4. How long did Jesus fast in the desert? He fasted for 40 days and nights in the desert before He started His ministry. 5. How did Satan tempt him? Satan asked Him. “Why don’t you turn these stones into bread, if you really are the Son of God?” 6. What was Jesus’ response? “Man doesn’t live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matt.4:4) 7. How did God provide for Jesus in the desert? After Satan left, angels came and attended Him. (Matt. 4:11) 8. According to John 6:30 what did the people ask Jesus to do? People asked Jesus for a sign to show that He was God, like the manna that Moses gave them. But Jesus said, not Moses but God the Father gave the manna. Jesus answered: “ For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. (and) I am the bread of life.” Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 9 of 16 LESSON 7 Living water: the gift of salvation from Jesus Christ Everlasting life: living with Jesus forever

Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name. That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. John 4:13-14 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

1. According to Numbers 20:3 how did the Israelites test God and Moses? T he wished they had died with Korah in fear of dying of thirst (last year of their desert wandering) 2. How did God satisfy their thirst? Again God gave them water from a rock. 3. How was Moses supposed to get water from the rock? This time, God asked Moses only to speak to the rock, not hit it. 4. What did Moses do? Moses hit it twice with his staff. 5. Why was God unhappy with Moses? Even though water came out, God told Moses he had shown unbelief 6. What was the consequence of Moses’ disobedience? He was only going to see the Promised Land and not enter it. 7. Jesus is our source of living water. Why did He call Himself living water? He said that because he is necessary for our eternal life and he will always satisfy us.

Jesus spoke to a woman in Samaria at a well. She was interested in the living water which will help her not thirst again. It was a big job carrying water from the well each day. Jesus offered her eternal life. She finally understood, when Jesus told her that He was the Messiah, the Savior of the world.

List five things that Jesus called himself and give the reference: 1. John 15:1-3 I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2. John 10:7 Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep 3. John 9:5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world. 4. John 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 5. John 11:25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies. 6. John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 10 of 16 LESSON 8 Sacrifice: a life given in substitution for another Offering: the giving of an important possession in worship; meant to express reverence and gratitude to God. Sanctification: set apart for God’s work.

1 Peter 2:24 He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed. Hebrews 10:8-10 First He said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them” (although the law required them to be made). Then He said, “Here I am. I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 7:26-28 (Trek Challenge) Such a high priest meets our need – one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

1. According to Hebrews 10:8-10 a. Whose will is Jesus referring to here? b. What is the will that needed to be done? c. Who made sure that Jesus’ sacrifice was done once and for all? d. We can never measure up to God’s perfection. We are sinful and no matter what we do, we cannot change what we are. e. What did Jesus sacrifice on the cross do for you? When we believe in Jesus sacrifice, we receive a righteous nature. Even though we still do wrong things, God sees Jesus’ sacrifice and not our sinful nature. 2. According to Hebrews 7:26-28 a. What do we know about the Levites or the priests? b. Who is the high priest that is mentioned? c. Why is Jesus called a high priest in this passage? d. Why does verse 27 say that Jesus doesn’t need to give daily sacrifices like the Israelite priests? e. Why is Jesus different than the Levite priests? f. Men from the Levite tribe inherited the job of being priests. They retired at age 50. 3. What did the sacrificial system telling the Israelites? It was a gift from a merciful God. a. By instructing the Israelites how to sacrifice, God was telling them that He wanted to be with them, but He could only be with sinless people. b. It reminded the people that their sins had consequences. Hebrews 9:22 “In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 11 of 16 4. Describe the 10 steps of an Old Testament sacrifice: a. The sacrifice had to be a male sheep (ram) with no spots, scars, and only pure white coat. b. The altar had to be made from all natural stones (not cut). c. Priests laid their hands on the head of the ram. d. Cut ram’s throat and collect blood. e. Sprinkle blood around the altar. f. Cut ram into pieces. g. Wash guts and legs. h. Put gut and legs back with the rest of the animal. i. Burn whole sacrifice. j. Repeat as needed. 5. Compare the OT sacrifice with Jesus’ sacrifice: OLD TESTAMENT JESUS Sacrifice wiped out past sin till you sinned again It covers past, present, future sins of all believers. Christ died once for all sins. More sins? More sacrifices needed. As a believer, your sins are covered by Jesus’ blood. You kept on sinning – so you had to keep on You still keep sinning, but Christ’s sacrifice was sacrificing. once for all. A perfect looking animal was only a symbol of As God, Jesus was the ultimate sinless sacrifice. sinlessness – not the real thing. You could die trying; the OT law is impossible for Jesus could not only obey the entire law, but He any of us to keep. fulfilled the law, all of it.

Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 12 of 16 LESSON 9 Good News/Gospel: the fulfillment of God’s promises to Israel by sending Jesus Christ as the salvation for all who believe in Him. Repentance: changing from sin and turning to God.

John 5:24 I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. John 3:14-16 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up. That everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

1. According to Numbers 21:4-9, what did God send the Israelites for complaining yet again about the manna? Fiery serpents (snakes with poisonous bites) and many died. 2. First time, the people repented and looked to Moses to intercede for them. 3. Numbers 21:7 “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes from us.” 4. What did God tell Moses to do to solve the problem of the serpents? To put a bronze serpent on a tall staff. Everyone who looked at it would be healed. 5. Why did they have to look at the bronze serpent? It meant they believed in God’s solution. 6. According to John 3:14, how was Jesus like the serpent on the pole? They both had to be lifted up so that people could believe and be saved. Only faith in God’s solution saves us. 7. What does it mean they “were lifted up”? They were raised up high (serpent on the staff, Jesus on the cross) but also they were honored for being God’s solution for salvation. 8. According to John 5:24, what 4 facts are we told about salvation: a. We must hear His word and believe. b. We will have eternal life. c. We will not be condemned. d. We have crossed over from death to life.

Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 13 of 16 LESSON 10

Adonai: a reverent name for God meaning “Lord”. Idol: a material thing but also the object of a false spiritual practice. Temple of the living God: each believer Resurrection: the miraculous event of Jesus coming back to life after being dead.

2 Corinthians 6:16-17 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said, “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people. Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you. Luke 24:5b-7 But the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told you, while He was still with you in Galilee. The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again. Exodus 20:3 You shall have no other gods before Me.

Read 2 Kings 18:1-6 and Luke 24:1-10 1. People started to worship the bronze snake (Nehushtan), forsaking the One True God. That’s why Hezekiah smashed the statue. 2. What are the unclean things mentioned in 2 Cor. 6:16-17 (the idols) 3. God hates it when people worship anything other than Himself, including a picture of Himself. 4. We worship a living God, our lives are totally different. New life in Christ means that we are free from trying to find a way to please God. 5. “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” Rom.8:2 6. The Lord’s Supper reminds us of Jesus’ death and sacrifice for us. 7. Through baptism we identify with Jesus death and resurrection. Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 14 of 16 LESSON 11 Wrath of God: God’s righteous anger at sin. Life: eternal life with Jesus (John 3:36) Life: the time between a person’s birth and death. New life: the life that Jesus gives, which is life forever with God and freedom from the curse of sin.

Joshua 1:8-9 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.

1. Numbers 13:17 – 14:8 12 spies were asked by Moses to go to the Promised Land (Canaan) and explore it, to see whether the people there are strong or weak, few or many. What kind of land it is? What kind of towns (unwalled or fortified). How the soil is (fertile or poor). They found large grapes, pomegranates, and figs in the Valley of Eshcol and returned after 40 days of exploring the land. They reported that the land flows with milk and honey, but people are powerful and cities are fortified. Also descendants of Anak live there (very large). We cannot attack them. We seemed like grasshoppers next to them. Ten of the spies spread bad reports. 2. What was Caleb’s response in Numbers 13? We should go up and take possession of the land, for we certainly can do it. 3. Does it show belief in God’s promise to give the Promised Land to the Israelites? Yes. 4. Who was the leader of the Israelites after Moses died? (Joshua) 5. What did God promise to give Joshua? (His companionship and guidance) 6. John 20:31: “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.” 7. Even though we are physically alive, we are spiritually dead. Only when we trust Jesus as our Savior, we can have eternal life. 8. Life = destination is heaven, living with Jesus through eternity. 9. Death= destination is hell, separated from Jesus through eternity. 10. What happens if someone doesn’t believe what Jesus said? (he will not have eternal life) No other religion can give you eternal life.

Jesus met all the requirements of the entire OT when He came to earth, died, and rose again. All we have to do is believe in Him. Trek Check &Lesson 1-12 Study Guide Page 15 of 16 LESSON 12 Memory :A powerful way to be faithful to God by thinking about what He has done in the past

Psalm 119:33-35 Teach me, O Lord, to follow Your decrees; then I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding, and I will keep Your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of Your commands, for there I find delight. John 5:23-24 That all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent Him. I tell you the truth, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

1. Now they were ready to cross the Red Sea into the Promised Land. First went the priests with the Ark of the Covenant. When the priests got their feet wet, the water pulled back (like the Red Sea) and the Israelites crossed on dry land. 2. They took 12 stones from the river and put them where they camped the first night. 3. What did the stones remind them of? (how the water were kept back so they could cross safely) Joshua 4:6-7 4. List the things that were in the Ark of the Covenant to help them remember God’s laws and what He did for them:  The Ten Commandments  A pot of manna  Aaron’s staff 5. According to Psalm 119:33-35 how can you keep on the right path? By remembering His promises. 6. Promises: John 10:27-29 He give us eternal life and we will never perish, and no one can snatch us from His hand. 1 Peter 2:9 We are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation called out from darkness to light 1 John 5:4-5 We overcome the world because we believe that Jesus is the Son of God. John 16:15; 23-24 We will ask and we will receive and our joy will be complete. Colossians 3:1-2 We have been raised with Christ .
