BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

1 Kairos is a 3 /2 day Christian program aimed at changing the lives of prisoners, particularly those who have the greatest potential to lead or influence others within a prison. The program is designed to challenge each participant’s attitudes, and to encourage change, by focussing on the beliefs of prisoners – beliefs about themselves, others, the world and God. A Kairos program for about 24 prisoners at Mobilong Prison is being held from xxxxxxxxxx. The program concludes with a Closing Ceremony, at which there is an opportunity for the program participants to speak about what the Kairos program has meant to them. For our invited guests, the Closing Ceremony offers a privileged insight into the life-changing impact that the Kairos program can have.

If you wish to attend, it is essential to RSVP on the attached application form as soon as possible (as numbers attending are restricted), but in any event by xxxxxxxxxxxx. (Please return application forms to the person who invited you, or post to: Kairos Mobilong Closing Ceremony, PO Box 242, Highgate SA 5063).

Please ensure that you read the Security Guidelines for Visitors before completing the Closing Ceremony application form. Please also retain the Guidelines and re-read them before leaving to attend the Ceremony.

Kairos Prison Ministry Australia (KPMA) appreciates your interest in the ministry. Your financial support would also be most welcome. KAIROS MOBILONG #xx CLOSING CEREMONY MOBILONG PRISON SECURITY GUIDELINES FOR VISITORS

The major concern of the staff at the prison is, naturally, security and safety. This applies to staff and visitors, as well as to prisoners. The following guidelines should be carefully read and must be adhered to by all visitors.

No person may attend the Closing Ceremony if he/she has any family member resident in Mobilong Prison or if he/she is on the visitor’s list of any prisoner in Mobilong Prison.

Please be at the Mobilong Prison gatehouse by no earlier than 4.45 pm and no later than 5.15 pm on Friday, xxxxxx. All visitors attending the Closing Ceremony are requested to line up at the gatehouse to enable names to be marked off the list of attendees, ID inspected and visitors signed in. Visitors will be scanned by metal detection equipment and then be escorted into the Visits Centre where the Closing Ceremony will be held. Those arriving late may be denied entry.

ID with a photograph such as a driver's licence or passport is required. Alternatively, two other forms of ID are acceptable. The name and address shown on your ID must be the same as the name and address entered on your application to attend the Closing Ceremony.

Handbags, wallets, money and mobile phones must not be taken inside the prison. Lockers are available at the gatehouse, but it is preferable to lock such items in your car. That is, you should bring into the prison only your ID and your car keys. Medication: If you have any medication you need to retain while in Mobilong Prison, please inform the prison staff prior to entering to make suitable arrangements.

You must abide by all prison procedures, and immediately follow all directions given by Department for Correctional Services personnel. We are their guests.

There are very strict rules regarding contraband being brought into the prison. Contraband has a very broad meaning in this context. There is a notice in the gatehouse with instructions. It is important to read this notice. The N.I.N.O. principle of “Nothing In, Nothing Out” must be strictly followed. Simply put, this means that you do not give anything to, or take anything from, any prisoner.

There may be opportunities to talk to some of the Kairos participants (and former Kairos participants) in the Visits Centre. Please do not agree to make a phone call, or pass on any message, or visit any friend or family member of a prisoner. Do not accept any mail to be posted. Do not make any promises of help of any kind, except by way of prayer. When speaking with prisoners, please do not divulge personal details, such as your full name or address, or where you worship, work, etc.

If appropriate, please relate any personal concerns or any requests from prisoners to a Prison Chaplain or a staff member. However, please do not make any promises that the Prison Chaplains can or will do a certain thing for the prisoner concerned. It may not be possible for them to do so. However, be sympathetic and compassionate, and mention that you will refer the matter to the Prison Chaplain or other appropriate person to follow up if possible.

Do not let the above comments unduly alarm or discomfort you. They are essential to enable Department for Correctional Services personnel to maintain security and to function smoothly with equity and fairness. Enjoy the time. It will be truly memorable and a blessing to all.

Thank you for your participation and support of the Kairos program. I look forward to seeing you at the Closing Ceremony.

Peace be with you, xxxxxxxx Leader, Kairos Mobilong #xx
