Volcanoes of the World Presentation Project

Purpose: to research and learn more about active volcanoes around the world. Each group will research one volcano and present their findings to the group in a 5-7 minute powerpoint presentation.

You should include the following in your presentation: A. Location of your volcano, including map(s) of general vicinity B. Basic information about your volcano: What type is it? What is the plate tectonic setting for your volcano (diverging or converging plate boundary, or is it a hot spot)? C. What is the history of your volcano? What eruptions have happened in the past and what damage did they cause? What features did they create? D. What are the hazards to humans (if any) posed by your volcano? E. What is the likelihood of future eruptions from your volcano? F. A list of at least 3 references that you used in your research. Full MLA format is required.

Your presentation will be judged on the following criteria (see the grading rubric): A. Does your presentation include everything listed above? B. Is your presentation engaging? Do you have many visuals of your volcano, including maps, pictures of nearby towns that might be at risk, pictures of past eruptions (if available), pictures of past damage (if available), etc. Are your slides visually appealing (font size easy to see, not too much text, etc)? C. Is your presentation well-organized in a sequence that makes sense for your volcano? Is your talk easy to follow? D. Is your presentation style clear and engaging? Are the presenters prepared, poised, and connected to their audience?

The following websites are very useful as starting points for choosing and researching your volcano: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_large_volcanic_eruptions_of_the_20th_century http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timetable_of_major_worldwide_volcanic_eruptions A list of currently erupting volcanoes can be found here, along with links for more info: https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/erupting_volcanoes.html

Volcano Information (12 points): ______3 pts. Location of volcano 3 pts. Shows map(s) of location and gives general information about the area, including nearby towns, etc. 2 pt. Shows map of location, but gives little information about the area. 1 pt. No maps and/or no information about the region are given. ______6 pts. Information and history of the volcano 6 pts. Includes interesting information about volcano, including plate tectonic setting, history of past eruptions (level of activity), and many pictures to illustrate the information. 5 pts. Includes interesting information about the volcano, but may be lacking some information. Several pictures to back up the information are shown. 4 pts. Includes most information (some is lacking) and some pictures. 3 pts. Significant information is missing, and/or not many pictures are shown to illustrate the information given. 2 pts. Includes little information and only a few pictures. 1 pt. Poor information and almost no pictures. ______3 pts Hazards and future of volcano 3 pts. Discusses potential hazards of volcano, including likelihood of a future eruption, and risks posed to humans and/or other species living near the volcano. 2 pts.
