Dear Parent/Guardian, Throughout the semester our class will be viewing videos/DVDs that act as supplemental material to the curriculum. The following videos are either not rated or are rated R and therefore I am asking parental consent for them to be viewed.

Gorillas in the Mist: A video depicting Dian Fossey’s work with the chimpanzees in Africa. This was a commercially produced video with a PG-13 rating. This video is used to show the research method of naturalistic observation.

Quiet Rage: An in-depth look at Zimbardo’s Prison Experiment run in Stanford in the 1970s. Though this video is not rated, it contains strong language. Video is an instructional supplement to the unit on psychological research methods. This video has been chosen because it depicts one form of research, an experiment, and also addresses the question of ethical research. (An episode of “What would you do, may be used instead of the video).

Temple Grandin: This is a commercially produced video with a PG rating. This is the true story of a woman with autism. Temple is a well-known autism success story and is a spokesperson for autism speaks. This video is shown during our unit on the human brain.

Brain Games: National Geographic series on how the brain works

Total Blackout: 1 partial episode when students study sensory deprivation.

I Have Tourette’s But it Doesn’t Have Me/Twitch and Shout: This program features children with Tourette’s Syndrome. Some people with Tourette’s demonstrate a symptom called “coprolalia” which manifests itself in the shouting of obscenities; these profanities are not bleeped in the video segment.

Sigmund Freud: Analysis of the Mind: This is an A/E biography video with no rating. It discusses Freud’s career, his various theories and his principles of psychoanalysis. This video has sexual overtones. This video is shown during our Founders of Psychology unit.

What about Bob: This is a commercially produced movie with a PG rating. It is a hilarious movie that portrays a man with a multi-phobic personality and is typically shown at the end of the research methods unit.

Stan Lee’s Super Humans: This is a television series from the history channel. It depicts people with “superhuman” abilities. Students will watch 1 full episode in the Fields of Psychology unit to discuss parapsychology.

2 minute clips of Remember the Titans, Waterboy, The Cutting Edge, Run Fat Boy Run and Dodgeball. These are all commercially produced movies with no higher than a PG-13 rating. Each clip is about 2 minutes long and is used to act as discussion points for Sports Psychology in our Fields of Psychology unit.

Regarding Henry: This is a commercially produced video with a pg-13 rating. This video is used during our memory unit to discuss amnesia and the connections between memory and personality.

True Life: Students may watch 2 episodes of this television show including True Life: I’m Deaf & True Life: I Have OCD. This program depicts young people dealing with these issues.

Your permission is required to meet District requirements for showing an unrated or rated R video in the classroom.
