To be qualified as a Member of good standing you have to pay dues: $110 for high schools and $30 for middle schools with an optional donation to the scholarship fund. VIII. Officer Reports

1. BCASC 2014 County Convention will be Saturday May 3, 2014, with a location TBA. To host you must come up with a 5 minute (maximum) presentation by the Sept. 19th meeting.
2. MS Leadership Workshop will be held at Plantation Middle on TBA from 8:30 am- 9:30 pm.
B) HS Vice-President:
-Reported that there were up to 40 schools in attendance along with over 300 kids.
C) MS Vice-President D) Student Advisors to the School board 1) Speak Up, Speak Out- strongly encouraged and group sizes are completely up to the school. To schedule a meeting, see the student advisors after the meeting. 2) School District Committees- Positions are available and applications are available. 3) Unsung Hero Award- Given to someone found doing a good deed. Once person is nominated, they automatically win and will receive a certificate and a pin. The form is found on the BCASC disk. VIII. Committee Reports A) Broward Student Ethics Forum
-Angela Ferini, the chair person of the Ethics Committee announced the meeting dates for members only on: Sept. 11, Oct. 9, and Oct. 30 all at Western High School at 3:30. -The conference will be held at Pompano Beach High School on November 8th. IX. Unfinished Business A) BCASC County Project Committee Chairs
-To chair a project, forms must be completed and submitted, by fax to Mr. Roland, by September 10.
-If a school did not receive a form, please email Mr. Roland.
-Chairs for each project will be announced at the September 19th meeting.
X. New Business A) County Convention Rotation Proposal -Piper motions: “I move that the BCASC establish a rotation plan for its Saturday county conventions. That plan, dividing the county into three areas: North, Central, and South. The North area including all middle and high schools located north of Commercial Blvd, the Central consisting of all middle and high schools located between Commercial Blvd and Stirling Road, and the South including all schools located South of Stirling Road. The order of the annual rotation will be established by the BCASC executive board. They convention would rotate between these areas with only the schools from the area designated as a convention area being able to make a bid to host a convention.” -Coral Glades seconds the motion. -The motion was carried B) Coral Springs motions that: “I move to reimburse Flanagan High School’s student government association for all of the expenses incurred form hosting the annual BCASC Kick-off dinner.” -Flanagan seconds the motion. -The motion was carried. C) Payment for the continental breakfast for MS Broward Student Leaders at NSU - Everglades motions that: “I move that the BCASC assumes the cost of the continental breakfast at both the Middle School Leadership Workshop and Broward Student Leaders Day at NSU.” -Coral Glades seconds the motion. -The motion was carried.

-Garret Johnson, FASC President, has chosen the state project to be Helping the Homeless. If there are any questions, contact PACE high school.
Roland Reports: - Minutes will be emailed to the advisors. If there are any corrections to be made to the minutes, the secretaries should be emailed immediately.
- There will be an option to for-go the reading of the minutes once they are sent out two full weeks before the next meeting.
- Any corrections to the minutes must be made prior to the reading of the minutes.
- If, however, the minutes are not received two full weeks before the next meeting, the minutes must be read.
- Stressed the importance of a student representative on a county committee (making reports to the school board.)
- FASC state project: “Helping the Homeless.”
- FASC Kick-off Conference will be Oct. 11-12 at Ocoee High School. The registration fee is $75(this does not include hotel.) This is for kids who did not attend SFLTC or Camp Eagle. Applications and forms are available.
- FASC will be February 14-16 in Lake City, Florida. There will be bus transportation available for $25 per person. - The planning committee for the MS Leadership workshop, both students and adults, must attend ALL meetings.
- Destination Diploma should be strongly encouraged this year.

We need a lot of help at the MS Leadership Workshop, especially from students who attended SFLTC or Camp Eagle this year. The workshop itself will be held on Saturday, October 19 at Plantation Middle School from 8am to about 9:30pm. We have to complete all of our planning at the next planning committee meeting. The dates, sites and times of these meetings are:
September 26 at Piper HS. September 26 is an early release day so high school students on the committee should plan to arrive at 2:00pm and adults (yes, student council, NHS and FEA advisors are invited to help) should arrive at 3:30pm.
October 5 at the Pompano Administrative Complex (610 NE 13 Ave in Pompano) at 1pm 2. The Ethics Forum Planning Committee has two more meetings. October 9 and October 30. Both meetings will be held at Western HS at 3:30pm. One of our committees has dropped out. We need two volunteers to help facilitate Ethics and the Law.
3. Registration for the FASC Kickoff Conference is due on September 27. Checks and registrations forms must be sent to Ocoee HS

c. Nov. 11 (veteran’s day) at 11:00 am at the Miami VA Hospital, there will be a care packaging event. They have asked us to help out in organizing and arranging the care packages and to bring some holiday cards to put inside of them. All of which will be sent to Afghanistan. So if you are interested, sign up right after the meeting. They really need help setting these up!
b) Student Advisor to the School Board- Midterm exams are before winter break and it was approved at the last board workshop (next year will follow this schedule). Sent out sept unsung hero awards. V. Officer’s Report
a. BCASC VP- This Monday, BCASC held the care packaging event. There was a huge ceremony, though it was mournful. Assembled a total of 47 care packages.
b. Michael Lee- Joe DiMaggio glove challenge: have 10 middle schools on board so far, can continue to join the MS vs. HS challenge.
c. Student Advisors to the School Board - Thanks Flanagan, amazing speak up speak out. Continue to schedule sessions. Like to thank Dillard and other schools of signing up for committees. You can continue to sign up for the positions. Thanks Piper for speak up speak out, everyone should still continue to sign up because if Kirsten can’t go, Sarah can. A lot of stuff ( budgeting) going on in school board/ pancreatic cancer awareness month (now November)/ trying to switch textbooks to online textbooks, won’t be implemented for this year or next year (they will implement it slowly) / unsung hero award 10-12 schools have been participating every month- emails will be sent to principals so they are also aware of the project (so you should get on board if you are not already)

-Mr. Roland says you must report to the school hosting the projects what you have done in the project, when it is completed.
a. Wacky Olympics: Plantation- Newsletter will be sent out to all SGA advisors and hosting info will be available shortly. [email protected] for updates. 3 themes to vote upon. The theme is (after voting) Fear Factor.
b. Joe DiMaggio: New Renaissance Middle- Trying to get most to all middle schools to participate. Challenges will be issued at the next BCASC
c. Environmental Project: Nova High School: Recycling bins in each high school/ beach clean ups/ make items with recycling items. Profits will go to the Philippines.
d. Destination Diploma: Miramar High School- videos of other successful graduations/ each school should have a banner with, those who are graduating, names.
e. VA Hospital: Coral Glades High School- Put them on stage/ if not, they are due by December 12th at the pompano complex.
f. Humane society: Ft. Lauderdale- has yet to receive items from any schools.
g. Penny Wars: Cooper City HS- all money goes toward sexual assault treatment center. It starts this month.
h. Food Drive
VII. Old business
a. Finance Committee: Mr. Roland- to raise money for the scholarship fund- what would be easiest to do is a 3 weekend period; each school would be encouraged to do a car wash. The charge would be a donation. BCASC will reimburse the schools for supplies. Sometime in March would be a good time. There is a motion to accept/reject the idea.
Mcarthur moves to accept the car wash for the BCASC scholarship fund.

VIII. New Business
a. Honor Fight-Talked about the vets from WW2 and Korean War -“I would like to propose that the BCASC form a committee to report how the BCASC (in the January meeting) could become involved in honor flights.”

IX. Announcements
Student Activities Liaison- Roland Reports
-The rule on volunteer hours on general: we hours are not given for a profit company. Volunteer hours should be non-profit: for schools, for charity, etc./ spread the word about the permission slip- any question in mind in whom you are volunteering for- a coordinator will make sure “yes I can take these hours”
-Humane society- 1 hour per day per kitten/puppy for up to 6 weeks for fostering.
-outside agencies do not determine what our rules are.
-go back to fellow students and tell them: make sure to check they can get their hours first
-Middle Schoolers: cannot earn hours during middle school toward graduation
X. At my school we… a) West Glades middle- 12th annual talent show- raised $1500
b) Monarch- broke record of homecoming game over 500 students.
c) Mcarthur- Mcarthur fest pregame celebration- with local DJs and rock bands
d) Pines charter- dancing with the staff
e) Bear middle- free carwash for the teachers
f) Plantation- lunch games to homecoming pep rally/ also did harvest drive
g) Ft. Lauderdale- successful homecoming- who wins games gets a homecoming ticket, also a partnership lunch with important political people
h) Silver trail- every month they do a big pep rally, did one for Veterans Day.
-Registration forms for FASC were sent out November 13th and 14th.

B) Honor Flight Representatives- Jordan Ferguson: Starts his presentation with a movie. It is a challenging task to send Veterans, but time estimates that we will have only 4 years to do so. He introduces a WW2 Veteran: Buddy, who told his story in the workforce. He is willing to work with us on our Honor Flight Project. They want to offer: business cards that are free to give out, pamphlets that can be mailed back, and shirts for sale (great way of making donation to the cause) www.honorflightsouthflorida.org

-Collect project papers to do at schools. The problem: school board members never hear back. The vice president school to work with the secretary school for write-ups (reports) of these projects, to send to the Superintendent.
-FASC Convention coming up quickly. Need to register!! Also bus registration forms- get them to Mr. Roland.
-Junior Counselor letters for SFLTC/Camp Eagle will be going out this week or Monday.
-Member Broward Student Leaders day at Nova. Applications are available. For freshmen-juniors to attend. The only ways seniors can go is if they are staff.
-McArthur is working on a way to make a donation online for Honor Flight. Two letters will be sent out to schools. It asks for a donation of anything they want to give. If every student gave 50 cents, we could send 100 Veterans. Go also to businesses to give a $10-$20 donation. February 18th to February 28th will be the big push dates for raising money for this.

-Cooper City High moves to change the format of Penny Wars. (The student councils that participate will set aside a week for penny wars. It will be a class competition. It will raise the money for the sexual assault treatment center. Half of the money will be given to the school and the other half to the sexual assault center. It will then go through McArthur high school so they can write the check.)

-Came up with a fundraiser idea of a flag. It will begin February 18th and finish the 28th. Definitely have advisors show video to school so there is full participation. On the 22nd, students in charge of this project will be going to the school board and asking for their support. We need cheerleading teams and bands, so contact the Co-chairs from Cooper City and Douglas.
-Go to some local businesses around your school to talk to them about Honor Flight and if they are interested in donating to the cause.

-Goal is to send 74 vets on May 10th.

Location change: February BCASC meeting has been relocated to Nova -Will still be hosted my McFatter High School. d. Roland’s Reports -The only way a senior can go to Broward Senior Leaders Day is if they staff and plan the event. The application deadline will be moved to next Thursday 1/23. Email to Mr. Roland: [email protected] -Underclassman: Asking for names of kids from schools who are attending Broward Students Leader’s Day. Nova and McFatter are the only schools not allowed to be picked up by Bus. Everyone else will be transported with a School bus. -There will only 36 JC letters accepted/ first come first serve. -Freshmen to juniors: the registration books of camp already went out to schools. $375 scholarship awarded to Broward county Public and Technical schools. -Seniors: Outstanding Senior Leader Banquet will be on March 7th. Need a picture (“selfies” are acceptable.) -Feb 7th deadline (speaking to juniors) Student Advisor to the School Board applications are due. People who accept the position are required to attend every School Board meeting. The election is held in March. -At our convention we will be electing officers for the BCASC board next year.
