Program For The Assessment Of Veterinary Educational Equivalence

Updated November 2007 Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Educational Equivalence (PAVE) Candidates are advised to consult the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) website (www.aavsb.org) as regulations and state acceptance can change. This program can be considered to have “steps” as with the ECFVG program.

The process 1. Application to AAVSB with letter of good standing from the school that the candidate is 50% through the program and includes the anticipated graduation date (this is sent out by the Registrar in Bayshore) 2. English proficiency – the candidate must have passing scores on one of the major English language testing services (TOEFL or IELTS), or an official school letter verifying at least three years attendance at a secondary school where the complete language of instruction was English. 3. The candidate must take and pass the Qualifying Examination (QE) consisting of a 300 item computer-based test. A candidate must be 50% of the way through a four year DVM program (i.e. after term 4). In order to fulfill the clinical requirement of the PAVE, the QE must be taken and passed before entering the 4th year. 4. The candidate must either enter a 4th year assessed clinical program at an AVMA- accredited school and graduate, or take a Veterinary Clinical Skills Assessment (VCSA) if he/she does not pass the QE prior to entering year four. 5. Take and pass the NAVLE (not part of PAVE certification but necessary in order to be licensed)

The Qualifying Examination (QE) – when and where A computer-based, 300 item multiple-choice examination held in January, May and September each year with deadlines for application in February, June and October before each testing date. The examination is internet-based and can be taken at SGU or a test center arranged by NBVME, but applications are submitted online through the AAVSB website (see above). Practice questions and other veterinary examination details can be found on the NBVME website (www.nbvme.org) Special accommodation is available if requested in advance – it must be submitted with the application, by the application deadline. Application forms are available online.

How much does the PAVE program cost? (not counting postage, travel to testing sites, accommodation, meals, etc.) a) Initial registration (includes first QE) $1,050 b) Proof of English Proficiency Requirement c) Qualifying Examination retake* $ 800 d) Veterinary Clinical Skills Assessment (VCSA) practical (if needed)** $5,000 * If a resit is necessary, the candidate will be allowed to sit for the QE at the next available test date **Not needed if you completed 48 weeks at an SGU affiliated school, unless you did not pass the PAVE QE prior to year four. See www.aavsb.org As of September 2007 22 states and 2 territories recognize the PAVE program. One of them (New York) recognizes the PAVE program but does not require it for SGU graduates (but to take the NAVLE for New York the candidate must pass the step 3 examinations – the QE for PAVE or BCSE for ECFVG). Utah recognizes PAVE if the candidate is licensed in another PAVE state.
