MSc Scholarships in the “Identification of DNA sequence motifs underpinning shoulder pain and dysfunction after breast cancer treatment.
Applications are invited for two MSc scholarships which are available as part of a three‐year (2015‐2018) National Research Foundation (NRF) funded project.
The research project is concerned with the sequence characterization of defined loci with the aim of identifying DNA sequence motifs with functional significance to underpin shoulder injury risk due to treatment for breast cancer. The successful incumbents will be expected to contribute to various parts of the interdisciplinary project involving molecular genetics, bioinformatics, cell biology and statistical analyses. The research will require interaction and communication with team members from different scientific domains, at the University of Cape Town. Research tasks will include the regular reporting of research progress outcomes at project meetings and seminars and in progress reports, as well as the preparation of scientific papers for publication.
Starting in 2015, the scholarship is available immediately. The successful incumbent has to have obtained a four year undergraduate / Honours degree in either Molecular Genetics/ Molecular biology, or a related discipline will be considered if the applicant demonstrates a strong knowledge of genetic association studies and its application to multifactorial phenotypes. An upgrade to PhD can be considered contingent to academic performance and suitability of the candidate at the earliest 18 months after commencement of the MSc programme.
Further information can be obtained from, and applications submitted to, Dr Delva Shamley. Email:
