Virginia is fortunate to have so many people who support our region. This past weekend, the Committee from the 2009 Virginia State Day (“A Wine Tasting in Virginia”) donated a Half Scale kit to the 2012 Maryland State Day Event. I know there are more people in Virginia that donate/volunteer their time to promote miniatures. Let’s hear from you.

Happy Minis, George & Donna

… From your Maryland State Rep…

Hello My Mini Friends

Region E-1 was well represented both in person and with exhibits at the First State Miniature Show on March 25th. There were several corner stores, a couple of Gazette prototypes and a variety of other treasures. One of the things that really caught my eye was Marnie King’s Titanic roomboxes. Check out the pictures; she has tilted the floor inside the box as if the ship was in the process of sinking. Very cool!

6 As many of you know this is the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, and several people have been talking about doing something to commemorate the anniversary in miniature. What do you think? Would this be something you might consider? Anyway, this is always a great show and if you haven’t gone before you are missing some good mini shopping, some great exhibits and a chance to support our hobby and our neighbors.

There are 46 Region E-1 members headed to National in July. That is awesome. This will be my second National and it is the 40th anniversary of NAME, so I’m hoping that it will be extra fun. I’ve also signed up to be a table hostess, so that will be a new experience for me as well. Olivia is planning to sell T-shirts for the event, so be sure to read all about them in her column.

Thank you.

Mary

…And Highlights from the NAME Board…

A Houseparty for Everyone!

Want to go to a Houseparty and not have to travel far and not have the hotel expense? Well you will have that chance. In the May/June 2013 issue of the Miniature Gazette there will be a complete houseparty. There will be plenty of time to plan your event for August/ September 2013. There will be a center piece in all three scales that you can make in your favorite scale, workshops, sales room, round-tables and much more.

Keep an eye on the Miniature Gazette and the Tiny Tattler throughout the year to learn more. Maybe you will want to sponsor a local houseparty, a club houseparty or something else. So many choices, what will you choose?

~Romaine

Bid !! Bid !!

May 26 & 27

NAME Members - Got your bid number? Or should we say, “Ladies & Gents… Rev up your engines!”… as the NAME estate online auction is just a few weeks away!

The auction is to be held on May 26 and 27. On both days, the auction will begin at 10 AM EDT and end each of the two days at 10 PM EDT. http://www.namea-3region.com/ring_in_the_new_year_auction.html?r=20120503210727

Anyone wishing to place bids will need a bid number, which you can get by emailing Babette Overman at [email protected]. This number will be your bid number with NAME… forever.

All items come from estates - wonderful pieces to be treasured. Many are signed and dated. This auction will have items in all scales.

The theme is around the INDY 500 as it is race weekend and Carmel is just a short drive from the track. So it will be called, “NAME: Rev up your engines!”

Thirty-three items (one for each of the drivers in the race) will be on the auction block each day. A total of 66 wonderful items will be finding new homes! Some of the items for auction are up for viewing now. You may see those items on this website page. This is where the auction is for the present time: http://www.namea- 3region.com/ring_in_the_new_year_auction.htm. Bookmark the website page for quick and easy access during the auction days.

Here you will find all the information on each item… a picture(s) of the item, an opening bid and a detailed description of the item, and the time the bidding closes on a particular item.

Bidders place bids by emailing Babette… (Yes, she will be glued to her computer). As bids are made, she will update the auction page. So bidders will need to check the website page often for updates. She will post the time of each bid, along with the bidder’s number… but never show who the bidder is by name. As the bidding on an item closes, she will notify the winning bidder by email.

Once the entire auction is closed, Babette will send out an invoice to each winning bidder and will then ship the items once payment has been made to Kim at the NAME office. NAME takes PAYPAL, credit cards and checks. Bidders are responsible for shipping and handling charges but will be charged only actual post office charges.

The two previous auctions were terrific. Email if you have any questions! I will be sending out all the details 8 to the bidders on Monday of next week. Any NAME members can get a bid number at any time even while the auction is going on.

Happy Bidding!... and Good Luck! Babette Overman

13 “The Corner Store”

It was a full day and an event full of fun and surprises as well… displays, silent auctions, door prizes, totebag favors, souvenirs, and a Friday night Round Table event. What a great sales floor! And what a great time had by all… including the crafters, the instructors, the planning committee, and the vendors! Two years of planning made it all worthwhile when the corner stores started to take shape.

For a limited time, there will be another run of the 2006 Row House for any of you who might want the companion piece but missed it the first time. See details in another page of this newsletter.

In the meantime, enjoy some of the photos that were taken!

CLUB CORNER

“MINIHULY GLASS” ~ by Ramsey Alexander

“Round Tuits!” What a wonderful concept! Bring a project to work on, a project you have been meaning to get ‘around to’… any project! We get to play with minis and be social with good friends at the same time. The best of both worlds!!!

Recently, the Inch by Inch Miniature Club gathered at Pat Johns’ and then the next month at Anita Myers’ homes for our monthly Round Tuits and a unique project that we had been talking about doing for ages… “Minihuly Glass!” Anita Myers, our club leader who named “Minihuly Glass,” offered to show us how she makes it. We all brought our color markers, recycled plastic, and our long tweezers and got to work coloring the plastic. Some colored in scribbles, some in even circles, and lots of designs in between. Then we stood in Pat’s kitchen using tweezers to hold our colored plastic over candles, which melted the plastic.

We did have safety in mind and were next to the sink a bowl of water… kept in readiness in case we needed to douse any burning plastic or extinguish any flames. Those of us who had a tendency toward OCD learned we had to get over it! I was determined to make a bowl. Not a chance! The plastic has a mind of its own… at least it did for me.

16

Ramsey attempts to make a bowl … from plastic that has a mind of its own!

Carolyn tried her hand at it A work of art in progress Myra gives it a shot

The sculptures that come out of this process are such fun! Some had holes in them, some look like sailboats, some look like monsters! It’s all in the imagination. Many have been given names and will be displayed in our mini museums, our stores, and or our living rooms! They can go anywhere. We all tried it and went home saying we were going to be collecting and coloring plastic to be transformed into marvelous creations that will be museum quality… at least in our little mini world!

Dad's Magic Toolbox

My dad was a model railroader. He was also a packrat! When he passed away a few years ago, my mom asked me to go through his workbench stuff and sort it out, take what I wanted and organize the rest for a yard sale. He had THREE workbenches going and more stuff than I could shake a stick at. He must have had three dozen X-acto knives--whenever one went missing, he just grabbed a new one! It was like that with everything. I found four Dremel tools,

21 several soldering irons, three electric sanders, dozens of boxes of q-tips...etc. After several days, I'd gotten to the point where I was tossing things in boxes to take home and sort out later. Needless to say, I ended up with a number of things I never use. It took me a few years to go through the stuff I'd brought home, and eventually I got to the "Magic Toolbox" at the bottom of one of the piles when I was digging around looking for something.

It was a cheap plastic thing with a broken latch that had been duct-taped shut. I didn't even remember what was in it, or why I took it. I'd been looking for clamps, or something I could secure a piece I was working on to my workbench, swearing and wishing I'd just ordered that table vise I'd seen online. I picked up the old toolbox to look in the box underneath it, the tape gave way and the lid popped open. All sorts of junk spilled out, including THREE table vises! Wow. I rooted around in the other junk that had spilled out, but didn't find anything fascinating, so I taped it back shut and put it back in the corner, figuring I'd sort through the rest of its contents another time.

This happened several more times--once when I was wishing I had some serrated x-acto blades, and poof, they again spilled out of the "Magic" toolbox. Another time, I needed some really fine chain for a doll I was working on, poof, there it was. Another time it was those little micro-brush things. And so on. Each time I went scrounging for something I desperately needed, I found it in that crappy old plastic tool box. And each time I could have sworn the newly found items were not in that box the last time I tripped over it.

I've decided not to clean out that toolbox or put any of its contents away. I'm just going to leave it taped up and sitting in the corner, and know it will work its magic next time I need it to. Thanks, Dad.
