For Your Group Presentations, We Shall Ask You To

World Memoir Presentation

Part I: Background (5 minutes)  Create a professional-looking power point presentation (no annoying effects) to convey information about geography and history that is relevant to the memoir. o Focus on visual images, maps or timelines, not text. o Explain each frame as you show it but do not merely read.  Include a bibliography. (This is different from a Works Cited! Use APA style this time.)

Part II: Content (10 minutes)  Present the content of the memoir through a creative activity: make a video, enact an interview, write a play, or do whatever else you think would convey the writer’s experience to your classmates. o Cover the entire scope of the book. Don’t worry about spoilers. o Make sure that your creation is an effective tool for communicating the content.

Part III: Analysis (5 minutes) Offer an analysis of the author’s purpose. Be sure to address all of the questions below, but synthesize your insights into a thesis-driven argument about the author’s purpose.  Consider the historical background that you have learned about, and situate your author in the economic and political reality that preceded the upheaval described in the memoir. o What was his or her life like prior to the events recounted in the memoir? Did your author desire change? If so, why? If not, who did? Why? o The author is talking about his or her personal experiences, but others may have had very different perspectives on what happened in the same place and time. Imagine what other perspectives there might have been. Use your knowledge of the history of the region.  What is his or her motive for telling the story?  How does this author account for the negative events experienced? o The very last question is the most important. Think about it. To what extent are the reactions of the people depicted a result of their own inherent goodness and to what extent are they the result of the conditions?

Expectations for the Presentation:  Plan your presentation and make sure that all group members contribute equally, both in the preparation and presentation.  Prepare your presentation and rehearse what you will say. Review the expectations below carefully.
