You lead a small team in a design workshop. One is a designer working on a computer, two people use noisy equipment to make models of the designs, one is an artist who creates paint effects and is therefore quite messy and you are in charge of the team and do the admin and keep the records on a computer.

Your team is unhappy – the designer says the equipment is stopping his concentration, the artist says he hasn’t got enough room to be creative, you are worried about paint getting on your computer, the modelers want the radio up loud so they can hear the music.

It is important to plan how you will demonstrate leadership skills. List five skills which could be used to lead others, then select two of these skills and explain how you would put these skills into practice in your role as leader of the design workshop team.

DELIVERY IDEAS Having effective personal leadership skills is a desirable quality for employability. Understanding the main features of leadership will enable learners to assess their own skills and qualities. They can discuss characteristics and attributes of different leaders enabling them to reflect on situations when they themselves have used these skills. This will reinforce understanding that leadership is across all levels and not just for people in senior positions. Providing opportunities to practice leadership skills using suitable activities will help learners gain confidence.

The assignment should be used after a number of discussions have taken place, so that the learner has already considered leadership skills used in different situations.

LO 1 – Discussion defining what is leadership. Learners can use their own experience or knowledge to identify someone who has provided a good role-model for leadership, describing the qualities they have displayed

Each learner could write down 3 characteristics of their selected leader using a template, for example:

Tutors could explain there are different types of leadership styles and how these impact on teams and individuals in the workplace. Using the table, learners can identify leaders and/or situations matching these styles.

LO2 – discussion of leadership skills needed in given situations. This can lead to the effects of leadership styles on team performance and motivation. Video clips from the web or YouTube could also be shown on leadership styles to stimulate discussion of the importance of motivating team members.
