The Web Design Foundations course is taught within one year. Students will receive 1 credit for successful completion of the program.
Web Design is designed to develop computer science and technology skills. Students will explore the historical, social, and ethical issues of using computer technology. This course provides an overview of the following computer concepts - HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Conditions, Loops, Variables, Functions, Threads, Strings, and Arrays. The complete listings of competencies covered are listed below the signature page. The students will develop computer science skills that will assist them with efficient production, accurate production analysis, management of information, and design and presentation of programmed projects.
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), a co-curricular student organization, will provide students with opportunities for leadership development, personal growth, and school/community involvement during the semester.
Attendance Attendance is critical to the successful completion of this course. Any student with an excused absence will be allowed to “make-up” or complete a missed assignment.
It is the student’s responsibility to obtain make-up assignments. Work, which was assigned prior to your absence, is due the day of your return. Certain classroom or field experiences cannot be duplicated for an absent student. In this case, an alternative assignment may be utilized.
Grading and Scale All assignments and tests are graded on a points system and the District’s grade scale will be utilized. Graded assignments will be regularly updated in PowerSchool.

Student Promise Since the material of this course provides students some basic knowledge of programming, by signing this syllabus the student hereby pledges to use this information for good and not evil. Any student caught purposely programming harmful bugs, viruses, or other inappropriate things will be denied future computer access and will be given strictly textbook assignments. Assignments and Evaluation Technique Assignments will be discussed in class and listed in PowerSchool. Students will all start the semester with a 100% (required Safety Test score), but you will need to work hard to keep your A. Assessment techniques can include:

CLASSROOM GUIDELINES
1. There are several tutorials that you will watch online, so if you don’t want to use the classroom set of headphones, then you should bring your own earphones or earbuds. 2. I will allow plenty of time to complete assignments in class. Thus, any work not turned in when due will be marked late in PowerSchool. Any worked turned in after the deadline is subject to a 30 point penalty and a maximum grade of 70 for that assignment. This penalty is to discourage the practice of procrastination; remember, procrastination = penalty. After 5 days past the deadline, late work will no longer be accepted. Excused absences are exempt from the late penalty but must be turned in by the next class period. 3. Cell phones are NOT allowed and must be put in the designated holder. 4. All district guidelines for computer usage will be followed. These computers ARE monitored (and can even be recorded), so stay on task. There should be NO expectation of privacy on any school computer. Please see our handbook for details. 5. No FOOD is allowed in the classroom without permission!! Allowed drinks must have a cap that remains on. When food is allowed, it must be eaten AT the center tables AWAY from the computers and hands cleaned before returning to the computers. 6. If you have an emergency and need to leave the class you must obtain permission from me. You must sign out and take the Hall Pass with you. Do not ask if we are in the middle of a lecture, a presentation or a class participation activity. Please remain in your seat at the end of class until the bell has rung. Anyone leaving before the bell has rung and I have dismissed the class will be referred to the office for skipping. 7. Our classroom is considered our workplace; therefore, professional and appropriate language, attitude, and behavior is expected and required. I will treat you with respect and kindness, and thus I expect the same of you.
Optional Fees
The FBLA membership fee is $25 (which includes a club t-shirt). This fee is paid once and covers multiple Business courses for the entire school year.

Standard 1 – Safety: accurately read, interpret, and demonstrate adherence to safety rules. Standard 2 - Create a questionnaire and conduct an interview with a client to gather specific information to guide the web development project. Standard 3 - Using the information gathered from the client interview, write a project brief that identifies the goals, audience profile, audience perception, primary message of the web site, and the competitive advantage of the client. Standard 4 - Research the specifications that will be required to produce a web site that meets the needs of the project brief. Standard 5 - Demonstrate an understanding of maintenance requirements for a web site that is aligned with the project brief. Standard 6 - Conduct a brainstorming session to solicit a client/s feedback on web site content. Create an outline that organizes the content into categories. Standard 7 - Applying the content outline, develop a diagram that visually represents the web site structure. Standard 8 - Convert the web site wireframes to individual web page wireframes. A wireframe should consider each element (e.g., navigation, images, content, functionality, and footer) and group the information of its corresponding page. Standard 9 - Explore the use of stock images and demonstrate an understanding of the various types of stock images like stock photography, microstock photography, and free (e.g., open source) images. Standard 10 - Compare and contrast royalty-free and rights-managed licensing and explain how each licensing affects the use of images. Standard 11 - Investigate multiple photosharing services and how they embed metadata within images to assist in keyword searches. Standard 12 - Demonstrate an understanding for how specific characteristics affect the quality and size of a digital image. Standard 13 - Compare and contrast raster and vector graphics and provide scenarios when it is best to use each format. Standard 14 - Research and identify the extensions of various image file formats like Bitmap, Tagged Image File Format, Windows Metafile, Joint Photographic Experts Group, Portable Network Graphics, and Graphics Interchange Format. Standard 15 - Investigate image optimization and its importance. Standard 16 - Explain the graphic design concept of composition. Include various applications like visual hierarchy, grouping, visual cues, and integration of elements. Standard 17 - Explore the use of grid-based layout and why it is used to create coherent, organized web pages. Standard 18 - Drawing on multiple resources, demonstrate an understanding of typography, including related definitions like measure and lead. Standard 19 - Conduct research to determine how various colors are perceived by specific audiences and cultures. Standard 20 - Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between pixels and display color. Standard 21 - Consider the two standardized numeric formats for color on the computer screen-RGB values and Hexadecimal code. Compare and contrast the format of values for each and briefly explain how they are applied to represent color. Standard 22 - Research writing styles on various web sites (include sites of well-known organizations and companies). Identify characteristics that that are consistently used and include examples of what made the text memorable and easy to scan. Standard 23 - Given a specific topic from a web development project, write content for a web page and apply the class writing guidelines. Standard 24 - Research various logos of well-known companies and organizations on the web. Identify shapes and colors that are consistently used and include examples of what made the logos unique, attractive, and memorable. Standard 25 - Drawing from various resources, identify several ways that a web designer can apply and strengthen brand management and identity. Standard 26 - Investigate how to setup and implement a secure e-commerce site. Standard 27 - Examine how demographics, psychographics, and audience data are used to market a product or service online. Standard 28 - As a team, use the survey results and develop a marketing plan that identifies the following for a web development project. a.) Promotions for both global (mass) and niche (micro) markets Page 6 b.) Web marketing strategies and goals c.) Market growth drivers and barriers d.) Product distribution and availability e.) Product or service pricing f.) Advertising options to be used (e.g., links, banner ads, viral marketing, social media). Standard 29 - Research the history of markup languages- briefly describe the function of markup languages and why they are different from programming languages. Standard 30 - Explore the origin of the HTML standard and creation of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Discuss the versions of HTML. Standard 31 - Define HTML tags distinguishing between empty tags and container tags. Explain their application to web development. Standard 32 - Demonstrate understanding of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Standard 33 - Explore the use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for page layout and cite evidence why CSS provides more flexible and precise layout capabilities than tables and frames. Standard 34 - Define the guidelines for effective use of file and folder management techniques to maintain directory structure. Standard 35 - Troubleshooting and formal testing is a systematic quality assurance process and should be routinely completed throughout the life cycle of a web site.
