30Th Annual Taco Picnic - Green Chili Sale & Roast

Annual Taco Picnic and Green Chile Sale & Roast Sunday, September 7, 2008 1-4 PM

2007 was our biggest event ever with more than 255 participants at the Werdigs’ Fortuitous Farm!! This year should be bigger and even more fun. Please join us on Sunday, September 7th, 2008 at the Werdigs’ farm for this year’s event. This event is into its 39th year and is the primary fundraising source for the UNM Alumni DC Chapter Scholarship Program. Two students at UNM receive scholarships totaling $1,750 per semester from this chapter, thanks to what Bob and Geri Werdig started many years ago.

Santa Fe Cafe in Arlington supplies the taco meat. This is the ninth year Kip Laramie and his staff have provided the most important ingredient for the tacos. Mateo’s in Woodbridge is supplying beans and rice. We will have taco shells, chips, frijoles and 505 Salsa (made in Albuquerque). Volunteers are needed to bring all of the picnic food items including grated cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, chopped onions, cookies, brownies or your secret recipe southwestern dish and to help with set up and serving. To volunteer, call or email Vicki Cundiff at (703)550-1297 or [email protected]. The picnic begins at 1:00 PM, and will be held rain or shine. Wear casual attire. There will be tractor rides for the young (or young at heart). NO PETS PLEASE

A ton of green chile will be available to buy raw or roasted at the taco picnic. If you are buying roasted chile, we suggest that you bring a cooler with ice or a cold pack to preserve it on the ride home. Increased freigth costs and last year’s floods in the Hatch area caused an increase in chile prices. Roasting will begin at 11:00 AM. We have two roasters to operate so we need roasting volunteers or you are welcome to come and help however you can or just watch. If you are unable to attend the picnic, you can pick up raw green chile on Saturday, September 6th between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM at Fort Ward Park at 4301 W. Braddock Road in Alexandria VA. (Be sure to complete the form with your phone and email address.) For information or to volunteer for the green chile sale call Don Ivers at (703) 765-3998 or Larry Harris at (703)370-3448. Email [email protected] or [email protected] .
