Prayer for Our Country USA: Almighty God, bless our nation and make it true to the ideas of freedom and justice and brotherhood for all who make it great. Guard us from war, from fire and wind, from compromise, fear, confusion. Be close to our president and our statesmen; give them vision and courage, as they ponder decisions affecting peace and the future of the world. Make me more deeply aware of my heritage; realizing not only my rights but also my duties and responsibilities as a citizen. Make this great land and all its people know clearly Your will, that they may fulfill the destiny ordained for us in the salvation of the nations, and the restoring of all things in Christ our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ. The 2021 Stamford Diocesan Charities Appeal form has been sent. Please make checks payable to: “The Byzantine Rite Diocese of Stamford” and send or bring your donation to the church. Cash is acceptable form for payment. Do not use Paypal for your donation ! Since every parish in the diocese has been assessed a target for this campaign, please do not sent your gift directly to Stamford. Our parish needs to be properly credited to meet its goal of seven thousand dollars. We did not meet our goal in 2020. While many of our regular contributors have fallen asleep in the Lord, it is even more essential that every parishioner consider such diocesan programs as vocations, religious education, evangelization, and stewardship worthy of personal charity. FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST SAINTS OF RUS’-UKRAINE Epistle - ROMANS 8: 28 - 39 ~ Gospel - MATTHEW 5: 1 - 16 TONE 3 On the Fourth Sunday after Pentecost, our Ukrainian Catholic Church remembers All Saints of Rus’ Ukraine. In the Tropar of All Saints, we learn that these were virtuous men and women “who glorified Christ: princes and , monastics and martyrs, and steadfast confessors of Christian Ukraine throughout all times.” They lived the beatitudes taught to us by Jesus Christ in His Sermon on the Mount. The saints “shine as bright beacons. . . . By their encouraging example, they serve communities of faithful throughout the Christian world.” (Kondak of All Saints). The saints are ordinary people who led extraordinary, virtuous and holy lives, who are honored by the church. They are exemplars for us to follow and emulate and they also serve as intercessors for us in heaven. In His three year public ministry, Jesus encountered many ordinary people from all walks of life—fishermen, Pharisees, adulterers, tax collectors, centurions—and all nationalities—Jews, Gentiles, Samaritans. He also cited ordinary people in the many parables He used to illustrate lessons as He taught His audiences and His disciples. Let each of us ask ourselves, if we would encounter Jesus today, how would He evaluate the quality of our faith and the humility of our prayer? In the Gospels, He emphasized these aspects of faith to the many people he countered and in His teaching parables. Would we be comfortable with Jesus’s assessment of the quality of our faith? Following the beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells his followers that people who receive these blessings matter: “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored?...” If you are a follower of Jesus living the beatitudes, you matter. You have an important role to play because you are the salt of the earth. Salt preserves and Christians help preserve what is good in the culture. In the ancient world, salt was very valuable: the Greeks thought it contained something almost divine, and the Romans sometimes paid their soldiers with salt. A soldier who didn't carry out his duties “was not worth his salt.” You are a seasoning agent. In a sense, you can bring the distinctive flavor of God's values to all of life. Note that salt, to be effective, must be in contact with the meat or fish it is to preserve. To be effective, we must be involved where we work and where we live. This puts us in a tension because the dominant culture doesn’t necessarily like us. The majority of the time, living according to the beatitudes may make us more successful in work. But we need to be prepared for the times it doesn’t. In Matthew 5:10-12, Jesus acknowledged the reality of persecution. But in our contacts with the culture, we must retain our “saltiness,” our distinctiveness. It’s a balancing act we’re called upon to maintain. “You are the light of the world.” The job description of a Christian is not only to maintain personal holiness, but also to touch the lives of everyone around us. Living the Year of St. Joseph Today we celebrate Father’s Day. Let us turn our prayers and devotion to St. Joseph, entrust our daily work to him, an opportunity “to encourage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal”. Remember our Fathers, living and deceased and also our Spiritual Fathers, our Clergy.

PRAYER TO SAINT JOSEPH FOR FATHERS

O blessed St. Joseph, loving foster father o Jesus and most chaste spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I/we ask your intercession on behalf of all fathers. Pray that like yours, their actions be loving, understanding, and wise. Implore your beloved Son to instill in them every grace they need to be the best fathers they can be. Pray that like you, their hearts will be blessed with ever-increasing love for their children and that they have the fortitude to faithfully care for and provide for their needs. And dear St. Joseph, when their earthly life is complete may they enjoy the beauty of everlasting life in union with you and all the angels and saints. Amen.

PRAYER FOR

O illustrious Patriarch St. Joseph, who carried the Infant Jesus in thy blessed arms and who, during the space of thirty years, lived in the most intimate familiarity with Him, take under thy powerful protection

those whom He has clothed with His authority and honored with the dignity of His priesthood, whom He has charged to continue His mission, to preach His Gospel, and to dispense everywhere His graces and blessings. Sustain them in their fatigues and labors; console them in their pains; fortify them in their combats; but above all, keep far from them all the evils of sin. Obtain for them the humility of St. John the Baptist, the faith of St. Peter, the zeal and charity of St. Paul, the purity of St. John and the spirit of prayer and recollection of which thou, my dear Saint, art the model, so that, after having been on earth, the faithful dispensers of the Mysteries of thy foster Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, they may in Heaven receive the recompense promised to pastors according to the Heart of God. Amen. (From the booklet~ Favorite Prayers to St. Joseph ~ Tan Books)

THURSDAY, JUNE 24, FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST Christians have long interpreted the life of John the Baptist as a preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ, and the circumstances of his birth, as recorded in the New Testament, are miraculous. John's pivotal place in the gospel is seen in the emphasis that Luke (1: 1-25, 57-68, 80) gives to the announcement of his birth and the event itself, both set in prominent parallel to the same occurrences in the life of Jesus. In the Eastern Christian Churches, St John the Baptist is usually called St. John the Forerunner, a title used also in the West ("Πρόδρομος" Pródromos in Greek, "Precursor" in Latin). This title indicates that the purpose of his ministry was to prepare the way for the coming of Jesus Christ. In the Byzantine Rite, the Feast of his Nativity is celebrated on June 24. It is a major feast day and is celebrated with an All-Night Vigil. It has an Afterfeast of one day. The feast usually falls during the Apostles' Fast (Apostles' Fast ~ May 30 - June 28, 2021).

TRADITION OF FASTING: The Apostles' Fast (Petriwka) the fasting period in preparation for the feast of the holy apostles Peter and Paul (June 29) beginning on the Monday following the Sunday of All Saints and ending on June 28. “Whoever prays and fasts has two wings lighter than the wind itself.” - St. John Chrysostom. The holy Apostles prepared themselves for the coming of the Holy Spirit with prayer and fasting. They prayed and fasted much before they went out to preach the Gospel. After prayer and fasting they ordained new presbyters for apostolic work, as we read in the Acts of the Apostles. "And when they had ordained to them priests in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, in whom they believed”. (Acts 14,22). St. John Chrysostom said that "the Apostles almost always fasted.” (Sermon, 57 on St. Matthew). So also holy Church from earliest times has prepared her faithful with prayer and fasting for the great feast of the Major Apostles, SS. Peter and Paul. Bless Our Fathers: Heavenly Father, Today we ask You to bless our earthly fathers for the many times they reflected the love, strength, generosity, wisdom and mercy that You exemplify in Your relationship with us, Your children. We honor our fathers for putting our needs above their own convenience and comfort; for teaching us to show courage and determination in the face of adversity; for challenging us to move beyond self-limiting boundaries; for modeling the qualities that would turn us into responsible, principled, caring adults. Not all our fathers lived up to these ideals. Give them the grace to acknowledge and learn from their mistakes. Give us the grace to extend to them the same forgiveness that you offer us all. Help us to resist the urge to stay stuck in past bitterness, instead, moving forward with humility and peace of heart. We ask your blessing on those men who served as father figures in our lives when our biological fathers weren't able to do so. May the love and selflessness they showed us be returned to them in all their relationships, and help them to know that their influence has changed us for the better. Give new and future fathers the guidance they need to raise happy and holy children, grounded in a love for God and other people - and remind these fathers that treating their wives with dignity, compassion and respect is one of the greatest gifts they can give their children. We pray that our fathers who have passed into the next life have been welcomed into Your loving embrace, and that our family will one be day be reunited in your heavenly kingdom. In union with St. Joseph, whom you entrusted with Your Son, we ask Your generous blessings today and every day. Amen. - Tony Rossi

This year, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church celebrates the 20th anniversary of the historical visit to Ukraine by His Holiness Pope John Paul II. During his pilgrimage, the Pope beatified 28 new martyrs consisting of bishops, priests, nuns, laypeople. This June, we will be posting short biographies about the martyrs. Priest and martyr Father Emilian Kowcz: was born on August 20, 1884, in Kosmach near Kosiv. After graduating from the College of Saints Sergius and Bacchus in Rome, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1911. In 1919, he became field chaplain for the Ukrainian Galician Army. After the war and until his imprisonment he conducted his priestly ministry in Przemysl, at the same time tending to his parishioners' social and cultural life. As an Eastern-rite Catholic priest, he had six children of his own, but despite his family commitments, he was able to devote himself to helping the poor and orphans. During World War II he bravely carried out his priestly duties, preaching love to people of all nationalities and rescuing Jews from destruction. He was arrested by the Gestapo on December 30, 1942. He displayed heroic bravery in the concentration camp and prevented the prisoners sentenced to death from falling into despair. He suffered a martyr's death in the Majdanek concentration camp on March 25,1944. He was recognized as a “Righteous Ukrainian" by the Jewish Council of Ukraine on September 9, 1999. Nun and martyr Sister Tarsykiia Matskiv: was born on March 23, 1919 in Khodoriv, Lviv Region. On May 3, 1938, she entered the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate. After professing her first vows on November 5, 1940, she worked in the convent, sewing clothes for the sisters and teaching the skill to others. Even prior to the Bolshevik arrival in Lviv, Sr. Tarsykiia had made a private oath to her spiritual director, Fr. Volodymyr Kovalyk OSBM, that she would sacrifice her life for the conversion of Russia and for the good of the Catholic Church. At 8am on July 17, 1944, Soviet soldiers surrounded the monastery, determined to destroy it. Sister opened the door, expecting a priest who was supposed to celebrate the Liturgy. Without warning, an automatic rifle shot her dead. All her life she witnessed to the authenticity of the consecrated life. She died a martyr for the faith. From the Vespers of the Feast of All the Saint of Rus’ Ukraine: May the supplications of the ancient righteous ones of the land of Ukraine* and the sufferings of our confessors of the holy Gospel* rise as fragrant incense before the throne of the Most High;* for it is by their sacrifices that the Church of Christ in Ukraine* is regenerated and strengthened. Glory…We glorify the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,* and render thanks to You, the Triune God of one essence,* for the precious treasure which You deigned to give* to our holy princes and teachers,* holy priests and monks, confessors and martyrs for the Church of Christ.* Their struggles are the source of our strength.* Therefore, by honoring their memory we, together with them,* beseechingly cry out:* Lord, grant that we may all be one,* that all the children of Rus’-Ukraine may extol You* with one heart and one voice, the only true God,* and become worthy of Your eternal bliss* in the light that knows no evening.
