Graphing Points in Four Quadrants

Thomas, Carissa Multimedia Lesson #1 - Summary

“ Graphing Points in Four Quadrants” Grade 6 Advanced Graphing in the Coordinate Plane (Chapter 10)

Classroom layout Students should be facing forward for direct instruction/ presentation; students may work individually, in pairs, or small groups for paper practice; students may work individually or in pairs with GeoGebra.

Prerequisite Knowledge for Students Students should have understanding of integers on the number line. Students should be able to graph integers and their opposites.

Prerequisite Knowledge for Teacher Teacher must be familiar with the Cartesian coordinate system and plotting points in the four quadrants. Teacher should also recognize common mistakes of sixth graders: moving along the y-axis before the x- axis, labeling quadrants clockwise, etc.

Standards Based Objectives of the Lesson 1. Students will identify the x- and y-axes in a coordinate plane. 2. Students will identify and plot ordered pairs in the four quadrants of a coordinate plane. MA.C.3.3.2

Time Frame This lesson will take approximately 2 class periods.

Materials Students will need: grid paper, rulers, Creative Coordinates worksheet, and laptops. Teacher will need: laptop and projector.

Vocabulary x-axis, y-axis, origin, quadrants, ordered pair, x-coordinate, y-coordinate

Content Description Students will understand the fundamentals of the Cartesian coordinate plane, including position of the axes, positive and negative directions, and the four quadrants. Students will learn to graph any ordered pair of real numbers as a point on the plane.
